A new Constantine series at HBO Max, from J.J. Abrams’ Bad Robot Productions, will reportedly recast the beloved DC Comics character, John Constantine.
John Constantine has lately been portrayed by Matt Ryan on NBC’s short-lived Constantine show, and thereafter on the Arrowverse’s Legends of Tomorrow. Prior to Ryan’s television description, the fan-favorite character was played by Keanu Reeves in the 2005 film orchestrated by Francis Lawrence.
One of DC’s unusual comic characters, John Constantine was initially introduced in 1985 and was given his own series in 1988. The character attracts equal enthusiasm from smoky noir detective fiction and dark occult fantasy. Constantine has prevailed as a unique and admired piece of DC lore for decades.
As the primary rigid DCEU model has given way to a less centralized pattern, many fans have crossed their fingers for more mainline cinematic Constantine-quality content to come.
A new announcement from The Illuminerdi alleges that Warner Bros. and Bad Robot are evolving a new Constantine series for HBO Max. The report claims that Warner is trying to recast the role of Constantine with a young actor of color, citing Riz Ahmed as the kind of lead they’re looking for.
The Illuminerdi’s article fits with a 2020 gossip that J.J. Abrams had signed on to create a Constantine film for Warner Bros.
Constantine prevails as one of DC’s most prominent characters, so the impression of a crucial new series should be amusing for fans. Keanu Reeves’s 2005 film continues to remain something of a cult-classic, and Matt Ryan’s current turn in the role has been highly lauded as well.
The character has yet to find sweeping success outside of a more affectionate comics fan base, but a leading platform like HBO Max could introduce the next iteration of the Hellblazer to a bigger viewership.
There’s also the possibility that the new Constantine show could be linked to past rumors of a Justice League Dark series at HBO Max. A Swamp Thing show released on DC Universe in 2019 to critical recognition, but it was discontinued shortly after its premiere. A new Constantine project could signal a Swamp Thing renewal on HBO Max, with both characters possibly coming together for a future Justice League Dark adaptation.
