The popular TV show Baywatch is getting a remake after a failed movie version in 2017.
The original show, which featured lifeguards on the beach, ran for 11 seasons from 1989 to 2001, and was followed by a spin-off called Baywatch: Hawaii from 1999 to 2001. The movie adaptation, starring Dwayne Johnson and Zac Efron, was panned by critics and put an end to the plans for a TV reboot. However, those plans have now been revived.
The TV remake of Baywatch is finally in the works, according to Deadline. The series, which is based on the iconic show about beach lifeguards, is looking for a network or a streaming platform to host it. The project is still in its early stages of development and has no cast or crew attached yet.
The COO of Fremantle International, Bob McCourt, revealed in 2018 that the company wanted to reboot the TV series of Baywatch after the 2017 movie, but the movie’s bad reviews stopped them. He said that they needed to attract a new audience for Baywatch and that the remastered episodes of the original show could test the demand for a reboot.
McCourt has been keen on bringing back the show about lifeguards for a while, but he is not the only one who wants a new Baywatch.
Carmen Electra, who starred in the original Baywatch show, said that she would be up for a reboot, but only if the filming was safer. She recalled the dangerous waters that they had to face during the show. Pamela Anderson, another star of the show, was not a fan of the 2017 movie version.
She had a small role in the movie, but she said that she “didn’t like it” because it ruined the TV show. She has not said anything about the TV reboot yet.
The original Baywatch show had a charm that the 2017 movie and other spinoffs could not match. A TV reboot may be the best way to keep the show’s legacy alive. However, the movie’s poor reviews may indicate that people are not interested in the show anymore.
But Fremantle’s reboot is finally moving forward, and a new version of Baywatch might be coming to our screens soon, after more than two decades since the original show ended.
