Free Guy Review: A Fun Watch With Its Share Of Adorable Clichés

Free Guy has hit the theatres, and spoiler alert: It’s light-hearted, entertaining, funny, and all in all, a great watch! Free Guy is a film that we’ve all waited for so long and I’m so glad it’s coming to the theatres and not a streaming platform.

The trailer showed us a tiny glimpse of Free City the gaming world. The special effects made it looked so real that I was instantly sucked into it. So catching that film on the big screen truly enhanced the experience.

Also, is it just me or after Deadpool Ryan Reynolds has just become infinitely more cool and funny? With each film I am just left in awe with his comic timing. Never have we before enjoyed a ‘Guy’ (#MetaPun) talk so much.

And just when we thought it couldn’t get better our favorite Deadpool (Ryan Reynolds) and Korg (Taika Waititi) from Thor: Ragnarok dropped a Free Guy trailer reaction video to announce Deadpool’s entry into the MCU. I know it is insanely smart!

So with all of this there was a promise of a film packed with action, games, comedy, and a whole lot of Ryan Reynold! I was literally counting down my days to the release day and I must say, it was an fantastic experience in the theatre.

Alright I’ll stop fanboying over our Free Guy, but believe you won’t be able to either!

Free Guy is an entertaining flick that blends technology such as AI and gaming with philosophical concepts like existentialism! The film follows the usual Ryan Reynolds brand of adorable humor and makes up for a light-hearted action-comedy!

Is It Worth Watching

Yes. Free Guy is for anyone who’s looking for some good-old commercial entertainment. It’s well-written to suit all kinds of audiences, and though it has the undertones of philosophical concepts such as existentialism, and nihilism it doesn’t delve too deep into them.

Plot

The film covers two worlds – The real world and the gaming world of Free City. In the real world, Antwan (Taika Waititi) owns this game of Free City, and he seems to have stolen the idea and code from Keys (Joe Keery) and Millie (Jody Comer).

Antwan (Taika Waititi)

Keys is forced to work at a junior level in Antwan’s company due to college debt. On the other hand, Millie tries to find evidence in the game that proves Antwan’s theft. In the Free City game world, there’s a background character called Guy (Ryan Reynolds)  whose AI code starts evolving. He starts feeling things, talking, and essentially making his own choices.

What happens to Millie’s mission and Free Guy is the entire story!

Millie : Free Guy

The film is well-written because all these concepts thatch might get too overwhelming is fun to watch. The logic behind games and AI is well explained, and it doesn’t overshadow the fun action or comedy aspect of the films.

Another aspect that I liked is the commentary on free will. The intentional irony behind the game’s name Free City when nobody is actually free is not hard to miss. So when Free Guy realizes he’s just a character in a game, he leans towards nihilism and voices out how it’s all pointless.

There are also these references to Captain America, Hulk, Knight And Day kind of action scenes blended with a bit of Matrix!

The only complaint I have is that the writers turned to the cliché of love solving everything at the end of the day. I think it was an easy resolution to the problems Free Guy’s code faces towards the film’s end.

Cast And Characters

Free Guy has a star-studded cast with Ryan Reynolds helming the story. We see Taika Waititi, Jodie Comer, Joe Keery, Lil Rey Howery, and Utkarsh Ambudkar. There’s also a cameo from Channing Tatum, who has still got his mad dancing moves. There’s Chris Evans as himself for a split second!

All the actors have played their roles just right. Taika Waiti is pretty eccentric and shifts from super chill to super evil in a matter of seconds. Needless to say, Ryan Reynolds’ brand of humor is spot on and, as usual, makes us laugh and go aww simultaneously!

Final Thoughts And Grade

Free Guy
3/5

Story: A

Cinematography/Animation: A

Overall this film is a much nicer and more fun version of Westworld meets Ready Player One. Everybody is happy in the end, and nobody is losing anything, except, of course, the antagonist!

The film will keep you entertained throughout despite its clichés and makes up for a good weekend watch! Catch it near your theatres because you’ll enjoy the CGI and VFX better on the big screen
