You may have experienced or heard about games charging you extra money or tricking you into making unwanted purchases. These situations can be very frustrating because no one wants to waste their hard-earned money.
Many people believed that Fortnite and Epic Games did the same and tricked players into making unwanted purchases. Based on this, the FTC (Federal Trade Commission) announced that Epic Games will refund $72 million to those players who were tricked.
1. How to file a refund claim for Fortnite with the FTC?
Players can submit a refund claim online at the official Fortnite File a Claim website. To apply for a refund, you will need either a claim number or your Epic Account ID.
Once you file a claim, it will be validated and reviewed. After this process is complete, the refund will be issued through PayPal. Please expect the refund to be processed by 2025. Unfortunately, only players in the U.S. are eligible for this refund.
2. How to know if you are eligible for a refund?
You may be eligible for a refund if any of these statements are true:
- You were charged in-game currency for items you didn’t want between January 2017 and September 2022.
- Your child made charges to your credit card without your knowledge between January 2017 and November 2018.
- Your account was locked between January 2017 and September 2022 after you complained to your credit card company about the wrong charges.
You must be at least 18 to fill out the claim form. If you are under 18, a parent or guardian must fill it out for you.
3. When is the last date to file a claim?
The last date to file a refund claim is January 10, 2025.
4. Background
The FTC will send payments to 629,344 Fortnite players in the U.S., totaling more than $72 million. Players who were charged for unwanted purchases and filed a valid claim by October 8, 2024, will receive money.
Epic Games, the company that makes Fortnite, agreed to pay to settle complaints from the FTC. The FTC found that the company unlawfully charged players for purchases they didn’t want, allowed children to make unauthorized charges without permission from their parents, and blocked some users from accessing their purchased content when they disputed wrongful charges.
