Oh no, someone has hired a Black Widow assassin. It’s bad news for Clint, but fans could not be any happier seeing Florence Pugh’s Yelena back on screen!
The mysterious Rolex is the central plot to Episode 4, as Clint and Kate attempt to break into an apartment to retrieve it. Kate finds the watch, but she pauses a moment too late, realizing that the apartment belongs to Echo, who’s right behind her.
Clint, who is also ambushed on his end, thinks he is fighting Echo. But with the iconic Black Widow outfit, it’s easy for us to figure out that it’s none other than Yelena.
Here I was thinking there’s no way Hawkeye could have a better action scene than the car chase in Episode 3. But the emotional gravitas when Clint and Kate got down and dirty with Yelena and Echo was mind-blowing.
My favorite bit? When Kate falls off the building, mirroring Natasha’s fall in Endgame.
You can see it in Clint’s eyes that he, too, is reminded of that moment, but this time his decision isn’t to hold on but to let go—as he cuts off Kate’s rope to allow her to escape the fight.
This fight scene ties in perfectly with Clint reminiscing about Natasha only a couple of minutes ago when he narrated the tale of “the best shot he ever took.” It was, of course, the shot he didn’t take with regards to killing Natasha and instead recruiting her for S.H.I.E.L.D.
It is tragic that Clint went from defying orders to assassinate Natasha to now blaming himself for her death. Yelena won’t be making it any easier, as she’ll use him as a punching bag for her grief and anger.
Still, we have to remember that Clint, Kate, Yelena, and even Echo are on the good guys’ side. Hopefully, it’s just a matter of time and communication that will lead them to team up against the real villains: Jack Duquesne, Kingpin, and/or whoever else is working from behind the curtains.
On those lines, I’m super excited about the next generation Hawkeye-Black Widow duo that will be Kate and Yelena.
Chaotic is one way to put it; powerful, another. Hawkeye will return with Episode 5 on December 15.
