God of War (2018) has one of the most gratifying combat systems of all the games out there, but it takes time and a ton of effort to truly understand its depth. However, the feeling you get from defeating anything that dare stands in Kratos and Atreus’ path is genuinely amazing once you get the hang of it.
But, if defeating regular enemies is becoming a little too easy for you, even on the hardest difficulty, then perhaps it’s time to take on the big leagues.
You can take on the game’s many optional bosses or try grinding your way through its challenge areas to test your mettle. For this one, though, we’re going to be talking about the latter of the two.
I’m talking about Muspelheim, a challenging area containing a series of challenges to test your combat abilities and obtain some much-needed crafting materials for creating Epic-graded items in the game.
Getting to the place is a different story, though, as that requires you to obtain certain Cipher pieces spread throughout the game.
If you’re wondering how you can obtain these Cipher pieces in God of War, don’t worry – I’ve got you covered.
You can obtain the 4 Muspelheim ciphers in the God of War (2018) from the Forgotten Caverns, the Cliffs of the Raven, The Summit, and the Witch’s Cave. Finding them will give you access to Muspelheim and its trials.
There are more details to obtaining these pieces than that – you need to look for them at specific places in these locations. Plus, we have to discuss the benefits of playing through Muspelheim (or suffering, if you’re still not that good at the game’s combat).
So, let’s get to it without any more waiting, shall we?
Where are the Ciphers for Muspelheim in God of War?
So, as I’ve mentioned just now, there are 4 Cipher pieces that you need to find for gaining access to Muspelheim, with an additional one locked behind the game’s story. Let’s discuss how to grab them all one by one, now.
I. First Cipher Piece – The Forgotten Caverns
To get this Cipher piece, you need to get on your boat and make your way to the Forgotten Caverns, which can only be accessed after the water receded the second time. Now, all you need to do is dock your boat and climb up the marked walls – the path is pretty straightforward.
Once you’re at the top, the chest containing the Cipher piece should be right in front of you.
II. Second Cipher Piece – Cliffs of the Raven
You can find the second piece in the Cliffs of the Raven, located Southeast of Tyr’s Temple. Once you reach the shore, make your way alongside the marked wall that leads up to some wooden boards. Now, break the boards with your Leviathan Axe and help Atreus get in the hole.
He’ll drop a chain for you – climb it to find the Cipher chest in front of you.
III. Third Cipher Piece – The Summit
As you reach the mountain’s summit and have Mimir join your team, head back down, and to your left, you’ll find the chest containing another Cipher piece. If you missed it the first time around, you can fast travel to The Summit and obtain it – easy-peasy.
IV. Fourth Cipher Piece – Witch’s Cave
For this one, you’re going to need the Shock arrows from Alfheim. Once you have that, go to the Witch’s House. To reach the specific place where the chest is, you can take the Gateway to “Witch’s Cave Lower Level” and take the elevator from there.
At the top, you should see a red sap at the left from the elevator – use the shock arrows to destroy it. Walk across the opening, and you’ll find the chest to your right.
So, there you have it, those were the four Muspelheim Cipher pieces that you need to access the Muspelheim trials. The next thing you might be thinking about is, what do we gain from going through these trials? Well, time to find out!
What reward do you receive for playing through Muspelheim?
First and foremost, this is an optional challenge arena and will not affect the main story whatsoever. Secondly, the Muspelheim trials are harsh and punishing – so if you’re not too confident in your build and combat abilities, then you might want to wait out on this till the end of the game.
With that said, though, some pretty sweet rewards do wait ahead of your suffering here.
Firstly, you can firm crafting materials here for creating Epic-graded items in the game. Secondly, at the end of the trials is a Valkyrie boss fight, making this area extremely important if you wish to fight Sigrun later in the game.
Either way, it’s a great area to farm for some good resources and testing your combat skills, and now you know how to get to the place too. So, good luck finding those Cipher pieces!
