The makers of Final Fantasy, in a live stream, revealed the next expansion of Final Fantasy XIV, the mega-popular multiplayer game. Titled ‘Endwalker’, it is slated to release in the fall of 2021.
Not much is known about the story as of now, but it seems to pick up straight after the events of Shadowbringers. The players will wage a war against the Garlean Empire and its newly crowned emperor, the infamous Zenos Yae Galvus.
Later in the livestream, Game Director Naoki Yoshida added that Endwalker will be the culmination of the story that began in 2013 with ‘A Realm Reborn’ and will also bring an end to the 10-year saga of FF XIV’s principal powers of good and evil: Hydaelyn and Zodiark.
In the new trailer, we see the Warrior of Light as a Paladin, helping the twins Alisae and Alphinaud fight. Alphinaud is seen sporting a new weapon: a laser-blasting contraption called Nouliths which are a set of blades that float above his back. These blades can slash at enemies, fire off magic spells or augmentations and also create protective barriers around teammates.
Yoshida confirmed that this was a demonstration of one of the two new jobs coming in Endwalker – a healer known as Sage. Notably, this will be an entirely new Final Fantasy job and not one derived from previous games like Final Fantasy 11 or Tactics. The Sage will have no required class, but you will need the Endwalker expansion and one job already leveled to at least 70 if you want to give the job a spin.
The final patch of the Shadowbringers expansion i.e. Patch 5.5, will be out on April 13th and should set up the story leading to Endwalker. Unlike expansions in the past games, there will be no extended story in the later patches. Additionally, Yoshida also said that in patch 6.1, a completely new story will begin.
