In the season 7 finale of Fear the Walking Dead, Madison was captured by PADRE, the survivalist camp training new fighters to bring about a better future, while rescuing Mo. Season 8 premiered this Tuesday, with a seven-year time-jump since her abduction, but the first episode reveals that she wasn’t killed off.
In fact, she’s been kept alive all these years, imprisoned and in a cell and used like a blood bag. When we see her marking the days gone by on the wall tally, her arm is covered in wounds and purple bruises, evidently confirming PADRE has been taking her blood for almost her entire duration at the camp. Yet, the season 8 premiere failed to mention the reason.
Teasing that the insidious reason will be revealed in the coming episodes of the last season of Fear the Walking Dead, showrunner Andrew Chambliss hints at PADRE’s “nefarious” plans for Clark’s blood. Read his full teaser below:
In that very first scene, when Shrike comes down and she draws Madison’s blood, we see that there are marks, and it seems like this is something that happens a lot. There maybe is a reason to take that risk beyond just wanting to punish Madison and torture her.
It kind of points to PADRE’s more nefarious side, and some of the things that they’re doing in the pursuit of survival that we will very quickly learn are pretty shocking and paint PADRE in a very different light from the idyllic summer camp that we see on that island in this episode.
The easy explanation? PADRE is not the world’s savior because whatever they do seem to be doing with Madison’s blood doesn’t seem to be working if they are still carrying on with it even after almost a decade of her remaining in their custody.
The aggressive training camp might be running tests on her blood to find a way to outdo the Wildfire Virus, but their continued failure makes me think something far worse will be revealed later in the current season. Clark’s involuntary blood transfusions isn’t the only thing that the last season of the spinoff has on its explanatory itinerary.
The series’ final run will also cover Morgan & Grace’s story and why they finally decided to join PADRE while uncovering the community’s dark side. The series also has to explain the whereabouts of Tower’s survivors and what they’ve been up to.
