Disconcerting Incident: Earthquakes Hit the Same Places Suzume Visits

Earthquakes are nothing new to Japan, and they occur frequently enough so that the Japanese joke about them rather than being scared of them. However, an anime predicting the earthquake will still leave you feeling slightly uncomfortable.

Shortly after the airing of Makoto Shinkai’s 2022 film Suzume on April 5, an earthquake struck two cities that had been featured in the film. A Twitter post, accompanied by images of the earthquake’s epicenter maps, drew attention to this intriguing coincidence.

However, the gravity of the situation was not lost on fans. The fact that the epicenters mirrored those in the movie was not a source of amusement, but rather a cause for genuine concern. The public’s reactions ranged from finding the coincidence unsettling to being filled with a sense of unease.

Hopefully, this is just a coincidence, or else the next earthquake is about to hit Kobe City. Almost a month has passed since Suzume’s release, so it is safe to assume everything will be all right for the Kobe residents.

However, fans are waiting for any news of a possible earthquake in Kobe. If it were to happen, Makoto Shinkai would become a prophet overnight, and people might start mass-streaming their work in hopes of predicting the future.
