The Falcon and The Winter Soldier‘s opening fight sequence revealed an extensive line-up of Redwing’s new powers. The drone, featured in the MCU, works jointly with Sam Wilson’s Falcon suit. This has made many wonder about the machine’s abilities and the new upgrades it might have obtained throughout the years.
In the Captain America and Falcon comics, Wilson develops the means to communicate telepathically with birds after being exposed to a Cosmic Cube that alters reality. This helped Sam see through the birds’ eyes, and he later went on to foster a falcon which he named Redwing.
Furthermore, his powers also let him read aliens’ minds who had evolved from the species (Shi’ar from X-Men) or the Inhumans who possessed bird-like features. However, Sam hardly ever used his powers to do so; rather, he’d employ Redwing and other birds as vanguards to help him form a battle plan.
The MCU, though simplified this significantly but functionally, by giving Wilson the same powers via Stark Drone MK82 922 V 8oZ V2 Prototype Unit V6 aka. Redwing, as named by Sam. It was specially designed to work with the Falcon jetpack after Sam joined the Avengers team in the aftermath of the Battle of Sokovia.
Flight being its most obvious power, Redwing is perfect for scouting through the skies. Given its close-packed size, it can also move through any area and even into tight spaces.
As a recon drone, Redwing comes complete with a 360-degree camera and tracking software. It allows the drone to scan surrounding areas through various visual spectrums, including infrared light, ultraviolet light, and even X-rays. The scanners are so effective that they were able to follow Ant-Man while in a running battle.
Other than spying purposes, Redwing is equipped with some offense technology as well. This was notable in Captain America: Civil War when Black Widow got into a stand-off with Crossbones’ terrorists during the operation in Lagos. The two shots from Redwing’s machine guns helped Balck Widow to retrieve the biological weapons from the terrorists.
The drone is also known to possess a tow line that saved Sam and Bucky when they almost got taken out by Spider-Man in Civil War. Sam activates the line from Redwing, which latched onto Spider-Man’s wrist and hauled him away as a means of defense.
Along with these abilities, Redwing can also split into three other drones, possesses an A.I., and, as was revealed in The Falcon and The Winter Soldier‘s pilot episode, also has been upgraded with pulse lasers and rockets.
