Meta has been shutting down all its Facebook Watch shows in favor of VR experiences, and the latest to be hit by this change is Red Table Talk. The Facebook Original show is the last one to be canceled. On its fifth season, the show is co-hosted by Jada Pinkett Smith, daughter Willow Smith, and Mother Adrienne Banfield-Norris.
In an Instagram Post, Jada Pinkett Smith officially confirmed that Red Table Talk shall no longer run on Facebook Watch. However, she has also confirmed that this is not the end of the journey for Red Table Talk and that they are in the process of finding a new distributor.
1. Red Table Talk’s Cancellation Comes Amid Facebook Watch’s Shutdown
Meta has already scaled back its original programming efforts and is shifting its focus to creating VR experiences in Meta Horizons Worlds. This can be deployed on its various chat platforms, such as Facebook, Instagram, and Messenger.
To complete this pivotal shift for the company, none of the remaining FB Watch Originals are making a comeback on the service for their next seasons. And the last and most notable of these shows is the breakout hit Red Table Talk.
2. Red Table Talk Hosted Important, More-Often-Than-Not Controversial, Conversation
Red Table Talk is a top-rated talk show on Facebook Watch that has inspired several impactful conversations about life. The show acts as an outlet for all topics that do not find themselves in the public space, including those regarding marriage, family, and culture.
The show has been running since 2018 and has been the spot for celebrity reveals and conversations that take the Internet by storm. It has featured several high-profile celebrities, including Sandra Bullock, Demi Moore, and Will Smith himself.
Jada Smith’s own affairs and marriage troubles, Olivia Jade’s college admissions scandal, and Jordyn Woods’ account of the incident with Tristan Thompson have all seen their time on the show.
After the Will Smith debacle at the 2022 Oscars (also read as Will-Smith slapping-Chris-Rock incident), the show is also known as having humiliated Will and leading to his notorious reaction. Jada Smith’s extramarital affair with singer August Alsina came out publicly on the show in Will Smith’s presence.
However, Jada Smith has revealed that the show aims to ‘broaden the empire.’ In an interview with Rolling Stone, the 51-year-old shared, “To be able to sit as three black women and see the variety of perspectives is really interesting because I know a lot of people just like to put black women in one big old pot. That myth has to be dissolved.”
Willow Smith also revealed that the show is based on the real conversations she had with her mother and grandmother. “We saw how much it helps us. It was like, ‘Whoa, this is really uncovering some things. I wonder if we can give this feeling to others.'”
3. Red Table Talk Will Be Back Soon
In an Instagram post on April 27, Jada Smith declared that Red Table Talk’s partnership with Facebook Watch was over. However, she also revealed that Red Table is in search of a ‘new home’ and that they would be back soon.
“We are so grateful to have had such a beautiful partnership with Facebook Watch, and we are sorry to see the entire team disband. We wish everyone well in their new journeys to come,” read the post.
She added, “We at Red Table are in talks of finding a new home and we’ll see you soon,” putting doubts to rest regarding the show’s return.
To say that there was any other option for the talk-of-the-town show would be a lie. Boasting millions of viewers, the show had to make a comeback. And also, what about Jada Smith’s promise to discuss her family’s ‘healing’ after the infamous Oscar incident? It has to happen!
Red Table Talk will be back, and fans, keep your fingers crossed for a quick revival of the show!
