The Boys Season 3 Finale Flips the Story Upside Down

The Boys Season 3 finale was the most shocking episode of the season. There were twists, turns, and our worlds turned upside down as characters changed sides every other minute. Here’s the gist of it:

Black Noir was killed by Homelander. Billy Butcher, the Boys, and Homelander teamed up against Soldier Boy. Ryan chose Homelander over Butcher. Soldier Boys was put into a cryogenic chamber. Victoria Neuman announced herself as a VP candidate.

I know that was a lot, but this is precisely how you felt throughout the episode. So take a deep breath because I will take you through each of these in detail.

1. Homelander Pulls Black Noir’s Guts Out

After Homelander learned that Black Noir was hiding the fact that Soldier Boy was his father, he killed him by pulling his guts out.

Black Noir

Black Noir musters up the courage to come out of hiding, assuming that he could convince Homelander to kill Soldier Boy. However, it is too late. The all-American supe knew everything by then.

All his life, he wanted nothing more than validation and a space where he could belong. He finally got this by coming to know that he has a family. However, it’s not a happy moment for him.

This is because with this information comes the realization that Vought has lied to him all these years. In fact, even his most trusted peer, Black Noir, hid this information from him and was in on it. He was the reason why Soldier Boy was taken away by the Russians.

All these things stir up a chaotic mixture of emotions in Black Noir, who, in a fit of uncontrollable rage, punches a hole through Noir and pulls out his guts. In his dying moments, Black Noir sees his animated friends, who abruptly disappear after his last breath.

2. Ryan Chooses Homelander Over Billy Butcher

Homelander discovers Ryan’s secret hideout. He convinces him that he loves him and will never leave his side, no matter what. So, Ryan decides to go with him, and the father-child relationship is born.

Ryan and Homelander

The last time we saw Ryan, he felt immensely hurt, all thanks to Butcher. The man told him that Ryan was the reason Becca died. Although this was said in the spur of the moment, without much thought, it affected Ryan quite profoundly.

We see him again in this episode. Homelander tells Ryan what it feels like to mess up. He says just the words and phrases the kid needs to hear.

He says that killing Stormfront wasn’t his fault. Sometimes when people have powers, they make mistakes because they don’t know how to control or harness them. He goes on to say that Homelander knows exactly how this feels and hence understands it.

As a result, he would never blame Ryan for it and will never leave his side. No matter what he does or becomes, he will always be there for him.

Even in the fight between everyone, Ryan decides to go away with Homelander. At the end of the finale, the supe introduces his son to the world. But all is not well.

A Starlight supporter throws a bottle at the two and hits Ryan. He calls Homelander a fascist. While nothing really happens to Ryan, Homelander lasers the person’s head off. The crowd is stunned for a second, but then everyone starts cheering.

The last shot is of Ryan’s face up close, and we see him a little unsettled. There’s a good chance of this being explored in the next season.

3. The Hate Triangle: Billy Butcher, Homelander, and Soldier Boy

Homelander and Billy Butcher team up against Soldier Boy when he attacks Ryan. The two come together for a brief second before Maeve starts fighting Homelander. Billy then takes on Soldier Boy himself.

Soldier Boy

Both Homelander and Soldier Boy had reservations about killing the other. After all, their relationship was that of a father and child. However, this emotion doesn’t last too long after they meet.

Soldier Boy tells Homelander that he wished he would have raised him. If that were the case, he would’ve raised a stronger superhero, not someone weak who was dying to get validation from the world.

Ryan is there with them because Homelander introduced him to his father. But a fight ensues, and Ryan lasers Soldier Boy. This merely enrages him, who then whacks him off.

Billy then begins to laser Soldier Boy, and Homelander joins in. After this, the two share just one glance at each other before Maeve starts attacking Vought’s leader, and Butcher goes for his father.

The fight continues as different people do different things, but here’s what happens in the end. Soldier Boy is almost about to unleash the energy blast from his chest when Maeve decides to leave Homelander and sacrifice herself to save everyone.

She tackles the old supe and pushes him through the glass of the building. The two start falling, and Soldier Boy releases that energy blast in the middle. Thus, the boys, Homelander, Ryan, and everyone else in the building are saved.

But wait, not all is over. There’s still a whole lot more.

4. Maeve Is Still Alive

Maeve remains alive at the end of Season 3. She is severely injured after losing one eye to Homelander and being exposed to Soldier Boy’s energy blast. She is now with Elena planning to get away from everything and live in some quiet place.

Maeve

The news shows how Maeve sacrificed herself to save everyone, and people are talking about all this. However, when Starlight (now Annie) enters the apartment, she sees the Queen with her girlfriend, Elena.

The two are ready to leave, and Elena says that she wants to live somewhere on a farm. Maeve wants to be as far away as possible so that Homelander can’t find her.

Ashley, Vought’s CEO, sees the CCTV footage where Maeve is in an ally and Kimiko is helping her into a van. She then deliberates just for a second before deleting the footage. There is one more person next to her (possibly her assistant), and she looks at her with a clear message, ‘This remains between us.’

5. Victoria Neuman Announces Her Candidacy for Vice President

Victoria Neuman is chosen as a candidate running for Vice President by Dakota Bob. If you’re wondering how this happened so suddenly, the answer lies in the scene with Deep.

Homelander orders him to do something for him, and we don’t know exactly what it is. In the next scene, we see Deep kill off someone in his pool. This man could’ve been one of the nominees for being a candidate, but since Homelander and Victoria are now friends, he is killed on the former’s orders.

6. Billy Butcher has 12 to 18 Months to Live

Billy Butcher is admitted into a hospital after he becomes unconscious at the end of the fight with Soldier Boy. When he regains consciousness, the doctor tells him that he only has 12 more months to live, 18 if he’s lucky.

The man returns to the headquarters and is welcomed by the team that had just declared itself a democracy. Annie has also been inducted into the team, and Butcher says that Victoria Neuman’s got to go.

Overall, this is all that happened in The Boys season 3 finale. It’d be fascinating to see if Butcher survives, if Ryan goes back to Butcher, and more.

About The Boys

The Boys is an American satirical superhero streaming television series developed by Eric Kripke for Prime Video. Based on the comic book of the same name by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson, which was originally published by DC Comics under their Wildstorm imprint before moving to Dynamite Entertainment, it follows the eponymous team of vigilantes as they combat superpowered individuals who abuse their abilities.

The show is a satirical take on the superhero genre and showcases a world where superheroes are corporatized and controlled by companies. What happens when these superheroes step out of line and rub some boys the wrong way, is the story.
