A lot of new and exciting things related to the highly anticipated film, Dune, are coming forth to prep you as the Denis Villeneuve film inches closer to its much-delayed release.
The Dune Movie official site has character descriptions of all the key players of the story along with aesthetically pleasing catalogs for House Atreides, House Harkonnen, and The Fremen.
And if verbal descriptions aren’t enough for you, IGN’s series, The Path to Dune, is providing exclusive clips and character videos.
So far, video profiles introduce us to the members and associates of House Atreides. These include Paul Atreides (Timothee Chalamet), Duke Leto (Oscar Isaac), Lady Jessica (Rebecca Ferguson), Duncan Idaho (Jason Momoa), Gurney Halleck (Josh Brolin), Dr. Wellington Yueh (Chang Chen).
Character videos highlighting the Fremen will drop on IGN’s page on August 19, followed by House Harkonnen on August 26.
Based on Frank Herbert’s classic sci-fi novel, Dune takes place thousands of years in the future, during a time when humanity has spread to other worlds in the galaxy. In this era, advanced technology like computers and atomic weapons are strictly forbidden.
A substance called Melange is a psychotropic spice that can enhance the mind and prolong life, with some gaining psychic abilities and the power to access the shared memories of their ancestors.
Much of the story centers around a desert planet called Arrakis (the only major source of Spice in the universe). Whichever house controls Arrakis stands to reap great wealth but also faces constant danger from rival houses.
Dune is such a massive film that it will also have a ‘making of’ book, and apparently, Hans Zimmer was so inspired when he looked at it, he decided to write a score for it.
As reported by io9, The Art and Soul of Dune, written by the film’s executive producer Tanya Lapointe, will release on the same date as the film’s debut. The standard edition will cost $50, but as for the limited edition, it will cost just under $600 (more than ten times the standard edition).
Warner Bros’ synopsis of the film reads:
A mythic and emotionally charged hero’s journey, Dune tells the story of Paul Atreides, a brilliant and gifted young man born into a great destiny beyond his understanding, who must travel to the most dangerous planet in the universe to ensure the future of his family and his people.
As malevolent forces explode into conflict over the planet’s exclusive supply of the most precious resource in existence—a commodity capable of unlocking humanity’s greatest potential—only those who can conquer their fear will survive.
The universe of Dune is so big that the novel has been split into two films. Speaking to Collider, co-writer Eric Roth confirmed that the upcoming film only adapts the first half of the book,
It’s completely the first half. Yeah. I didn’t know when we started, so I think I adapted a little more than the first half and started going into the second half of the book. But I’ve seen the film, it’s pretty much the first half.
Eric Roth, Co-Writer
Like many other films, Dune was pushed back several times due to the pandemic. So, Warner Bros. hasn’t yet officially greenlit the sequel as that decision is likely to depend on how well the first film does when it hits theaters and HBO Max on October 22, 2021.
