The “Evil Dead” franchise returns with a new entry, “Evil Dead Rise,” whose director Lee Cronin takes the franchise’s vicious sense of evil and love of gore into new territory.
The film follows a family living in Los Angeles who stumbles upon a creepy-looking book that contains a sinister force within its pages. After releasing this darkness from the book, it targets and possesses the family’s matriarch to spread its evil power to everyone else.
Even though Bruce Campbell’s Ash isn’t around for fun this time, there are plenty of great frights for fans to feast on. But be warned: “Evil Dead Rise” is not for the squeamish.
Cronin crafts a final stretch full of bloodshed and wild horror that can be tough to keep track of through all the chaos.
1. Evil Dead Rise Ending Explained
Evil Dead Rise ends with Beth and Kassie defeating the Deadites and escaping, concluding with a connection to the film’s opening scene.
The horror begins when an earthquake reveals a secret vault underneath Ellie’s apartment building. Naturally, the kids decide to investigate. In doing so, they find both the Book of the Dead and a mysterious collection of records, with their curiosity soon getting better.
Of course, franchise fans will know that opening the book and playing the record can mean only one thing: the Deadites have been awoken and are now at large in the building.
The Deadites characteristically waste no time torturing the apartment’s inhabitants, and Ellie is their first victim. She is brutally killed by cables in the building’s elevator before she is possessed, subsequently proceeding to terrorize the other family members.
Bridget gets an incredibly raw deal, and is soon possessed after Deadite Ellie cuts her cheek with a tattoo gun and licks her. Things only get more violent when Ellie is lured into the corridor of the apartment block and goes on a chilling murder spree.
By the end of the bloodbath, only Beth – who has revealed she is pregnant – and Kassie have survived the ordeal. They escape to the block’s parking garage, where a gruesome Deadite monster chases them.
After a suitably brutal showdown, Beth successfully lures the creature into a woodchipper and is duly destroyed, allowing her and Kassie to drive away to safety. But that’s not quite the end of things.
2. What happens at the cabin in Evil Dead Rise?
Although most Evil Dead Rise unfolds in an apartment building, the main action is bookended by two sequences in a cabin-in-the-woods setting for which the franchise is best known.
At the start of the film, we see two female friends who appear to be holidaying together at the cabin – only for it to emerge that one of them is possessed. She viciously removes her friend’s scalp and decapitates her boyfriend by a nearby lake.
It is unclear how these events relate to the movie’s main plot for much of the runtime. We are told the cabin scene takes place a day later in the chronology. However, after the garage scene, it becomes clear how the two strands are linked.
The possessed girl from the cabin is revealed to be another tenant of the block where Ellie lived, who had emerged in the car park to discover the bloodbath as she was preparing to drive to the cabin retreat. Naturally, she opened her mouth to scream – and the Deadite chose this moment to swoop in and process her.
3. A Big Brawl
After Ellie makes it back into the room and Bridget escapes the restraints that Danny put her in, a massive brawl erupts that causes the entire apartment to be chaotic. Danny ends up battling with Bridget in the kitchen, where she stabs him multiple times with a knife, nearly killing her brother.
At first, Danny seems powerless to stop Bridget until he can turn on the stovetop and use a spray can to craft a flamethrower that lights Bridget’s head on fire. It doesn’t kill her for good, but it’s enough to keep her down for a while.
As for Beth, she ends up in a gruesome fight with Ellie that spills into the living room. There’s blood flying everywhere, and Ellie is tearing Beth up. Although Danny tries to help, he’s quickly tossed aside by Ellie, who nearly has Beth in a prime killing position. However, Kassie can give Beth an edge when she slides her mother’s scissors over to Beth — who uses them to stab Ellie through the nose.
It temporarily incapacitates Ellie long enough for the group to escape the apartment but isn’t enough to fully take her out for long.
4. Is there a post-credits scene in Evil Dead Rise?
There isn’t a post-credits scene for the movie, but a small audio detail after the fact.
After the credits end, a fly buzzing can be heard in the background—only a little by way of additional scenes, but a neat little atmospheric detail.
