The great war between Sauron and the Elves will intensify in Season 3.

This war, known as the War of the Elves and Sauron, is one of the greatest events in Tolkien’s Second Age. Season 2 laid the groundwork for this war with the Siege of Eregion, where Sauron attempted to take the Rings of Power.

In Season 3, two major battles are expected to be in the spotlight. First, the Battle of the Gwathló, where the Elves, commanded by Gil-galad, defend their homeland against the evil forces of Sauron.

Second, the Siege of Imladris, where Elrond’s newly established Rivendell is threatened by Sauron’s forces. These battles are expected to add more action and drama to the show as the Elves fight to protect Middle-earth.

One of the most chilling things to expect in Season 3 is Sauron selecting the bearers of the Nine Rings of Men.

Season 2 showed how Sauron retrieved the Nine Rings and hinted at handing them over to powerful lords of Men. These powerful men will eventually become the Ringwraiths, or Nazgûl, who serve Sauron in The Lord of the Rings.

There are theories and speculation about who these men could be. Some believe that Theo, a character introduced in Season 2, could be one of them. Others suggest that Kemen, who is establishing a stronghold in Middle-earth, might also be one of Sauron’s chosen ones. Fans are eagerly anticipating how these powerful men will fall under Sauron’s manipulation in Season 3.

How Will Pharazôn and Númenor Confront Sauron?

Pharazôn’s story in Season 3 will be a mix of corruption and war. He is the king of Númenor and is already dealing with a civil war in his kingdom.

According to Tolkien’s books, Pharazôn eventually faces off against Sauron in Middle-earth before bringing him back to Númenor, where Pharazôn becomes a victim of Sauron’s corruption.

Will We Learn More About the Stranger?

The Stranger’s identity was one of the biggest mysteries in Seasons 1 and 2, but by the end of Season 2, it’s revealed that he is Gandalf. Building on this, Season 3 is expected to explore Gandalf’s role in Middle-earth.

As a powerful wizard, Gandalf will play an instrumental role in helping the free peoples of Middle-earth in their fight against Sauron.

What Will Happen to the Balrog in Khazad-dûm?

Yet another story that season 3 can fixate on is the fate of Khazad-dûm’s ancient demon, Balrog. The book-accurate Balrog ends up bringing doom to the dwarven kingdom, but the show might have different plans for the demon.

This makes it all the more suspenseful for the viewers, as the dwarves thrive without being aware of the threat that looms from the demon beneath their lands.

Season 2 Summary and Recap

Season 2 saw a deep dive into how Sauron rose as the main villain, pretending to be Annatar (Lord of Gifts), while simultaneously forging the diabolically powerful Rings of Power.

Apart from the wondrous CGI and an overstuffed complexity of plots and sub-plots, the themes of power, deception and manipulation surely stand out.

That aside, the key character development of Elendil and Durin had quite a lasting impact on the audiences, while the inclusion of Tom Bombadil added plenty of emotion and depth to the multi-layered story of Middle-Earth.

What we’re left with is a white-hot mess led by Sauron and his forces, while the rest of the Middle-Earth shakes in fear and apprehension.
