Dungeons & Dragons is a famous fantasy role-playing game where users build their own characters to advance through fictitious medieval worlds. It has acted as an inspiration for several screen adaptations over the years, which includes a live-action movie formerly released in theaters in 2000. Although it starred a strong cast, the movie was critically panned but managed to generate two sequels published directly to TV.
A prominent cartoon series in the 1980s took a different strategy with the story. It observed a group of children from the real world transferred to the Dungeons & Dragons universe, where they spend the series attempting to find their way back home.
It’s not yet confirmed if Paramount’s forthcoming feature will be more of a meta-story like the cartoon series, or if it will solely be set in a mystical fiction world like the 2000 movie.
Michelle Rodriguez, Justice Smith, and Bridgerton fame Regé-Jean Page have joined the ensemble cast in Paramount and eOne’s Dungeons & Dragons feature film.
Rodriguez, who is best remembered for her character as Letty in the Fast and Furious franchise, and Smith, who has featured in blockbuster films like Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, and Detective Pikachu, have both locked deals to appear in the upcoming movie, which is based on the famous role-playing game possessed by Wizards of the Coast.
The rights to the Dungeons & Dragons movie shifted to Paramount Pictures, which also has the rights to other Hasbro properties such as Transformers, Micronauts, and G.I. Joe. The Dungeons & Dragons revamp seems to draw closer to really occurring this week.
Reports say that Chris Pine is now in discussions to star and also produce the adaptation. It’s not surprising that Pine is being contemplated by Paramount, as he also portrayed their Captain Kirk in the most recent Star Trek films.
Plot elements for the Dungeons & Dragons outline adaptation are being kept firmly under wraps, but we do know that Spider-Man: Homecoming‘s writers Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley penned down the latest translation of the script, based on a prior draft by Michael Gilio. Goldstein and Daley are also going to team up as directors.
Jeremy Latcham, who previously served as SVP of Production and Development at Marvel, is now producing through his contract with eOne (Hasbro’s entertainment arm) along with Hasbro’s Brian Goldner, who has also joined as producer. The Dungeons & Dragons revamp is presently scheduled to be released in theaters on May 27, 2022, following hold-ups due to the coronavirus pandemic.
This will be a major feature film established on the property since Jeremy Irons starred in New Line Cinema’s modification in 2000.
