John Wick 4 has finally started production, with a release date set for May 27, 2022. This comes two years after Lionsgate confirmed the fourth installation in the opening week of John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum.
The John Wick franchise is wickedly famous for announcing movie releases via text messaging, and has continued the tradition for the initial announcement for John Wick 4. Originally scheduled for May 21, 2021, the release was pushed back due to the pandemic and other scheduling conflicts.
As revealed in a fan tweet, Lionsgate reaffirmed that John Wick 4 will be back in 2022:
The story is far from over for the once-retired hitman. The thrilling chase that started with the purpose of avenging a murdered dog garnered a fanbase that the modest beginnings of the franchise couldn’t predict. But it would ensure more of Wick on the silver screen.
In fact, John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum was the first film to end the reign of Avengers: Endgame on the box office. It also scored the franchise’s personal best with 56 million USD on its opening weekend.
In the third movie, Wick is on the run after having broken one cardinal rule—to never kill on the Continental Hotel grounds. With an open contract on his back, he has to find a way out of New York, where not all favors he calls will be met by loyalty.
At the end of the third movie, we were left with Wick being betrayed by Ian McShane’s Winston, who initially appeared as an ally and granted him a grace period to run away.
John Wick 4 is expected to depict the aftermath of these events, especially an escape from an underground bunker that he’s thrown into with Bowery King.
Keanu Reeves will return as John Wick, which he admits is a character he’d love to keep playing whenever the opportunity arises.
Japanese-British singer Rina Sawayama will be making her movie debut in the movie. Joining them will be Shamier Anderson, Bill Skarsgard, and Donnie Yen.
John Wick: Chapter 4 is scheduled for a theatrical release on May 27, 2022.
