Avatar 2: The Way of Water trailer was released a day ago, and it already looks bigger, better, and grander than the OG movie. Although the trailer has just one dialogue, you can’t get your eyes off the spectacular visuals, which tease a lot of details.
This article is a trailer breakdown, and I’ll be taking you through all the Easter eggs, details you might have missed out on, cast and characters, plot, and a whole lot more. So, let’s just dive right into it.
1. Who is the human in Avatar 2?
Avatar 2 showcases Jake Sully, his wife, Neytiri, and their four kids. Three of the kids are their biological offsprings and part of the Na’vi tribe in Pandora. They are Neteyam, Lo’ak, and Tuktirey.
However, Jake and Neytiri’s fourth child, Miles Socorro, Spider, is adopted. He was born in Hell’s Gate, the human settlement in Pandora, during the events of Avatar and after the war, and was taken in by Sully.
2. What is Avatar 2’s timeline?
Avatar 2: The Way of Water takes place after about 10 years since the events of Avatar. The movie ended with a war between the Na’vi tribe and the humans who wanted Pandora’s metal Unobtanium. The Na’vi won the war for the time being and liberated their kind from humans, who were apparently made to leave their land.
3. The Lands of Pandora
In the trailer, we see the Sully family and different people from the tribe explore various parts of Pandora, which is a vast ecosystem in itself. Built with a blend of nature and mysticism at its core, it has diverse cultures and regions.
According to the synopsis, the family is forced to leave their homes, and while we still don’t know why, we see them explore various regions, and a highlight of this is a surreal aquatic region. This could be a crucial part of the film, considering the movie’s title.
4. Avatar 2 Trailer Reveals Creatures Such as Banshees
In the trailer, we also saw numerous magnificent creatures both in the air and in the ocean. One such creature was the Banshee which was introduced in the first film. Banshees are creatures that the Omaticaya could connect with through a neural interface and fly in the sky.
However, the colors of the Banshees seem to be a little different in the trailer, and it would be interesting to know why. Another majestic creature revealed is the Ocean’s Toruk. The Ocean’s Toruk is a gigantic whale-like animal controlled only by the most prominent leaders of the Na’vi kind.
In the trailer, we see a silhouette (possibly Jake Sully) holding fins of the Ocean’s Toruk underwater. This could have a cultural significance for him trying to assert his dominance over the different tribes in Pandora.
5. Avatar 2 Teases a New Tribe
Speaking of a new tribe, we will be introduced to the Metkayina tribe, who seem to live on a shore by the ocean. This could mean that while exploring, the Sully family encounters the tribe. However, the trailer also has shots that depict conflict between the two.
The Omaticaya tribe could be outsiders to the Metkayina, which could be one of the reasons for a dispute between them. Moreover, the existence of a human child in the Sully family wouldn’t make it easier for the oceanic tribe to accept them.
6. Role of Humans in Avatar 2
By the looks of it, humans are still very much pursuing the metal Unobtanium. We see a large-scale industrial area with choppers and heavy machinery in a couple of scenes. However, we are also shown how Jake tries to maintain peace between the two species.
Adopting Miles, aka Spider, was one such step toward a resolution between the humans and Na’vi. However, Producer Jon Landau revealed that all these efforts would be in vain, and the two species would inevitably clash.
This dynamic, along with the dynamics between the Omaticaya and the Metkayina, could form the film’s core premise.
6. Avatar 2 Cast Members
Almost all the central cast members are returning for Avatar 2. These include Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Giovanni Ribisi, Sigourney Weaver, and even the main villain of Avatar, Stephen Lang. We’ll also be seeing new faces such as Michelle Yeoh, Kate Winslet, and Vin Diesel.
Two of the most prominent new faces are Kate Winslet and Vin Diesel. Fans speculate that they are the heads of the Metkayina tribe in Pandora. We also see Kate Winslet perform an underwater ceremony, which could have significance to the Sully family or the larger Omaticaya tribe.
7. Is Stephen Lang returning as an Avatar soldier? Is he the main villain of Avatar 2: The Way of Water?
Stephen Lang will be the main villain in all Avatar sequels. He is most likely returning as Colonel Miles Quaritch in the form of an Avatar soldier and will be playing the antagonist.
This can be seen in a tweet that shares a side-by-side comparison of Stephen Lang in human form and an Avatar shown in the trailer. How this happens could also be a core part of the narrative and maybe the ‘ancient threat’ from the synopsis.
8. Avatar 2: The Way of Water Release Date
Overall, these are all the prominent Easter eggs and details that you can gather from the trailer, interviews with James Cameron, and other press material. Avatar 2: The Way of Water will be released on 16 December 2022. I have so many questions about the movie and the trailer and can’t wait to witness this epic on the silver screen.
9. About Avatar: The Way of Water
Avatar: The Way of Water is an upcoming American epic science fiction film directed by James Cameron and produced by 20th Century Studios. It is the second film in Cameron’s Avatar franchise, following Avatar (2009).
Cameron produces with Jon Landau. Cast members Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Stephen Lang, Giovanni Ribisi, Joel David Moore, Dileep Rao, CCH Pounder, and Matt Gerald are all reprising their roles from the original film, with Sigourney Weaver returning in a different role. New cast members include Kate Winslet, Cliff Curtis, Edie Falco, Brendan Cowell, Michelle Yeoh, Jemaine Clement, Oona Chaplin, Vin Diesel, and CJ Jones.
Avatar 2 revolves around a universal concept of family and follows Jake Sully and Neytiri 14 years after the first film as they focus on protecting their child.
