Episode 2 of Uzumaki Has Shown a Huge Drop in Animation Quality

The popular manga series Uzumaki by Junji Ito finally got its anime earlier last week. By the standards that Junji Ito set with his manga, the first episode was really good. It had fluid animation and great art, which reflects the quality of the manga’s art. Sadly, the same cannot be said about the latest episode of the anime, as there are some places in the anime that seem a bit weird.

In this article, we will discuss the various reasons why the latest episode of Uzumaki wasn’t as well accepted as the previous one and will also have a small recap of the episode.

Animation of Uzumaki’s Episode 2 Fell Off

Compared to the impeccable animation of the first episode, the second episode has failed to meet expecations. This is because although a huge part of the episode has been made well, there are certain crucial moments in the episode where a sudden huge drop in animation quality can be observed. In all seriousness, it’s quite funny to see this. Here’s an example:

In this scene where we’re watching a couple running away from their parents, who were trying to separate them, there’s something off about the running animation which makes it almost funny. That’s what shouldn’t happen, right? Uzumaki is a horror anime with some real spooky scenes, including this particular scene. A seemingly hilarious scene due to mistakes in animation, reduces the overall impact of the show.

Besides this scene, there is one other scene where Goshima Kirie was seen climbing the stairs of a lighthouse. On her way up, there was one particular frame that looked quite off:

There’s a huge lack of consistency in the animation of the second episode, since well and badly animated scenes are woven together. It’s almost as if fans had to wait for years for Uzumaki to get its adaption, only for the anime to use its entire budget up in the first episode.

Besides the animation, there’s also a seeming drop in quality of the art in places. While one can’t expect the anime to keep up with the manga art style (let’s be real, Uzumaki manga has really great art, it’s going to be hard to incorporate all that into the anime), the differences are still very pronounced. If the anime doesn’t fix the inconsistences, they may suffer more backlash in the future.

What Happened in Episode 2?

The latest episode of Uzumaki has featured several events related to the spiralling phenomenon happening together. The particularly slow classmate from episode one developed a hump on his back, which was later revealed to be the shell of a snail. Soon he transformed into an entire snail, revealing the true horrors of the spiral.

Following this, we got to see a couple in love, that were separated by their families that had beef with each other. The guy told Goshima that they were going to elope in a few days, as they couldn’t bear to live with their twisted families.

After this, Goshima met up with her boyfriend, who agreed that their family that lived in the shacks were heavily influenced by the spiral, which caused their hearts to be twisted as well. After this, he sensed something off about Goshima’s hair, and warned her that it may be getting too long. Surely enough, the next day Goshima’s hair grew uncontrollably long and formed spirals.

Her curls became a huge hindrance in her life. Her boyfriend, Shuuichi came and saved her though!

Right after this, Goshima told Shuuichi that she wanted to help the two lovers escape from the town and they went to help them. Weirdly enough, when the two were caught, they twisted their bodies and got entangled to each other. After this they slithered like snakes and went into the ocean to preserve their eternal love.

Finally, after this, there were rumours in the town that the inactive lighthouse of the town had finally become active, and that people who directly look at the light coming from the lighthouse were going crazy. When Goshima went to check what was happening, she realized that the rays from the sun that hit the Fresnel crystal were so strong that it reshaped the lens to look like a spiral.

When the light entered the lens, it created a region so hot that it burnt everyone in the lighthouse. When Goshima realized this, she rushed herself and the children inside the lighthouse. Unfortunately, only Goshima and one of the children managed to survive the heat, and the other child was completely incinerated.
