Epic games takes over Bink Video maker’s RAD Game tools in order to integrate the latter’s technology into its Unreal Engine.
RAD Game Tools is a video game development toolset that was developed in 1988. According to RAD Game Tool’s website the toolset has been used in more than 24,600 games and one of their products has been built into almost every game shipped today. Talk about market monopoly!
RAD Game Tools gets purchased by Epic Games, thirty-three years after the latter’s founding in 1988. Epic games plans to use RAD Game Tool’s technology in its unreal engine, especially the compression technology to improve the quality and load time of their popular games like Fortnite.
Epic CTO Kim Liberi recently stated,
“ We know first-hand how impressive RAD’s compression technology is, having used it to improve the load time and quality of our most popular games-including Fortnite.”
“ The RAD team includes some of the world’s leading compression, video and game dev tooling experts, and we are thrilled to welcome them to the Epic family.”

According to the Epic Games website, the partnership will allow more developers to access their tools and make their games load and download faster. This will offer their players a better and higher quality video and gaming experience.
However, the statement also specified that RAD Game Tools will continue its existing partnerships in the game, film, and television industries. Its technology will be available to other companies, even those that don’t use Unreal Engine.
RAD Game Tools founder and CEO Jeff Roberts said,
“ Our work with Epic goes back decades, and joining forces is a natural next step given our alignment on products, mission, and culture. We both believe that solid technologies enable developers to build beautiful, performant, and reliable experiences.”
