The trial between Epic Games and Apple is due to take place in May 2021, and as stated in the court filing, the trial will not be under a Jury, but rather, a bench trial. Also, a pre-trial will occur on October 19 to further fix all the problems surrounding the trial.
The date has finally been set for the lawsuit between Apple and Epic Games, and it will be almost a year from now before it takes place.
To refresh your memory, around the end of August, Epic Games rolled out an update for Fortnite that allowed players to purchase V-bucks, the in-game currency, from Epic themselves.
This system essentially bypasses the payment systems set up by Google and Apple and violates their policies. Due to the update, Fortnite was eventually removed from both the Play Store and the App Store, which led to Epic filing a lawsuit against the companies.
However, it seems the stars weren’t in Epic’s favor, as Apple proceeded to threaten the company into removing their developer account, meaning that Epic Games won’t be able to develop and publish games on Apple’s operating systems.
Not to mention, Epic was heavily criticized by the judge presiding over the case as well, stating how the company was not honest and had utilized underhanded tactics leading up to the lawsuit. Even Apple didn’t sit back at it, slandering the lawsuit by Epic as a marketing tactic.
However, both companies finally achieved common ground when they rejected a jury trial and asked for a bench trial, leading up to the current situation.
Regardless, it will undoubtedly be interesting to see how to case eventually turns out.
From the looks of it, things are not looking too good for Epic, since they’ve been on the losing side this entire time, but who knows? Maybe, the case proceedings might as well do a complete 180!
