Grey’s Anatomy – a drama that connects boomers, millennials, and possibly Gen Zs too has long run its course, feels lead actress Ellen Pompeo.
In a recent interview with Insider, Pompeo, who has been a household name for the last two decades, shared that she has been trying to convince people that the show should end. Of course, no one’s listening to her, including her friend and series creator Shonda Rhimes.
Going strong even in its 18th season, Pompeo doesn’t know when it will end, but she wants it to end soon.
I’ve been trying to focus on convincing everybody that it should end.

In the medical series, the actress plays the lead star, Meredith Grey. After multiple ups and downs, she has always returned for another season. But she does feel that the team has used every possible story and angle, leaving them with nothing – except fans still aren’t tired of them yet.
I feel like I’m the super naive one who keeps saying, ‘But what’s the story going to be, what story are we going to tell?’ And everyone’s like, ‘Who cares, Ellen? It makes a gazillion dollars.
Pompeo
Whoever told Pompeo that wasn’t wrong, she became the highest-paid actress in 2018 when her annual salary for Grey’s Anatomy was revealed to be $20 million. Although not the No. 1, she does continue to keep her position in the top 10 list of highest-paid actresses till today.
When it comes to ratings, Grey’s Anatomy’s season 18 started low compared to its 2019 ratings with only 4.77 million overall viewers, and it recently hit its record lowest with episode 7 bringing in a mere 3.5 million.
Fans sure love to see Grey’s Anatomy going on forever, but it seems like the loyal fans are dwindling too.
Much of the reason for low ratings might be the confusing lack of attention to storylines. Pompeo was, in a way, right. After nearly two decades of storytelling, how long can one stretch a show?
The award-winning show Grey’s Anatomy is currently the longest scripted American television drama on ABC, propelling Pompeo, Chandra Wilson, Sandra Oh, Patrick Dempsey, and the others to fame.
With season 18 only halfway through, the show hasn’t yet been renewed for season 19. Only time will tell if it continues.
Grey’s Anatomy season 18, episode 9, will return from a short hiatus on February 24, 2022.
