Grey’s Anatomy star Ellen Pompeo teases a potential comeback in one of the show’s future episodes.
Pompeo is one of the three original cast members remaining on the show, alongside James Pickens Jr. and Chandra Wilson.
However, the creators clarified that she would not feature much in the show’s current season. A recent trailer suggested that she would leave Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital in the next episode scheduled to air on February 23, 2023.
Pompeo shared a message on Instagram for fans who supported her throughout the 406 episodes of the show. In the post, she was seen posing in front of a sign that reads, ‘All you need is love.’
She addresses her impending departure and hints at a possible return in the future.
This isn’t your first time on the rollercoaster… you know the show must go on and I’ll definitely be back to visit.
Will she be back as our favorite Meredith soon? Now, that is a million-dollar question.
One element that suggests that she will conveniently fit into the plot if she wants to return is that she doesn’t leave the hospital in disgrace or is killed. Meredith is shifting elsewhere so that her genius daughter can get the special attention she needs. That is a very organic way of bidding farewell to the show for the time being.
Fans can expect her in specials like wedding episodes. She might also get called if the doctors need her help tackling a seemingly impossible case in one of the future episodes.
Despite not featuring as Meredith, Ellen Pompeo will continue to serve as the executive producer of the show, a post which she assumed in 2017. She will also continue as the narrator, ensuring that the show’s voice remains faithful to the fans even after Meredith’s departure.
There have only been two projects where Pompeo has played a character other than Meredith since 2005 (and we are taking into consideration her cameo role in Taylor Swift’s song Bad Blood). So, it makes sense that Pompeo wants to spend time on other projects.
Hopefully, we will see her making cameo appearances in random episodes throughout the season, like Gina Linetti in Brooklyn Nine-Nine.
