Why Taron Egerton Does Not Want to Play James Bond on Screen

Actor Taron Egerton explained in his recent comments why he feels he’s not suitable for the role of James Bond.

The discussion about who will take over as 007 after Daniel Craig, has been ongoing even before the release of No Time to Die in theaters in 2021.

Egerton, who rose to fame by portraying the character of Eggsy in the Kingsman movies, has been a fan favorite for the part of the legendary MI6 secret agent. Despite this, Egerton clarified that he was never being considered for the role of the next Bond.

In a recent interview with The Telegraph, while promoting his new film Tetris, Taron Egerton discussed why he has no plans to portray James Bond.

The actor, best known for his role in the Kingsman franchise, mentioned that the role requires immense physical endurance and also comes with numerous other responsibilities. Egerton also made it clear that despite being a popular choice among fans, he has never been approached to play the iconic MI6 agent.

I don’t think I’m the right choice for it. You have to be consistently statuesque to be that guy. And that’s something that I am still striving for. I’ve always struggled with my weight. [Playing Bond] is a bit like being a brand ambassador as well as being an actor. And that could be really fun in microcosm, but I’m sure I read that Barbara Broccoli said that it’s a 15-year commitment. It’s sort of irrelevant how I feel about it, anyway, because I can tell you there have been zero phone calls.

Taron Egerton himself has acknowledged that he might not be tall enough to play James Bond, as he is one inch shorter than Daniel Craig, who was previously criticized for being too short for the role.

Due to this, there are rumors that the next Bond actor will be over 5-feet-10-inches tall and below 40 years of age. This criterion eliminates popular choices like Henry Cavill, Tom Hardy, and Idris Elba.

In the meantime, Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Regé-Jean Page are being considered as the top contenders for the role.

Additionally, it appears that Taron Egerton is not interested in committing 10 to 12 years to play James Bond, which is what the franchise producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson are looking for in the next actor to take on the role.

It’s understandable why Egerton would not want to take on such a demanding commitment. Furthermore, like other fan favorites, Egerton’s fame may also hinder his chances of playing Bond. After winning a Golden Globe for his portrayal of Elton John in Rocketman, Egerton has kept himself occupied with projects such as the Apple TV+ miniseries Black Bird and his upcoming film, Tetris.
