Black Adam Star Finally Breaks Silence on Henry Cavill’s Superman Exit

Dwayne Johnson observed and fulfilled many DCU fans’ hopes when he fought for Cavill to revive his role as Superman in Black Adam. His hopes for a fight between the Kryptonian and the anti-hero were dashed when Cavill announced he would not be continuing as DCU’s Superman only a month after confirming his return.

Since the confirmation that Cavill will never don the symbol of hope again, Johnson hasn’t commented on his co-star’s hasty and awkward exit. But in an interview with Variety, he finally breaks his silence.

The Black Adam actor explains that it is similar to a regiment change in a football team simply because the current coach or quarterback doesn’t fit the vision of the team’s new owner. Read his full answer below:

But I think it’s almost like when you have a pro-football team, and your quarterback wins championships, the head coach wins championships, and then you have a new owner. And a new owner comes in and says, ‘not my coach, not my quarterback. I’m going to go with somebody new.’

The actor is referring to the management change that came when Warner Bros. Discovery brought on James Gunn and Peter Safran as the heads of DC Studios. Their DCU vision board had a place for Superman, but not essentially Henry Cavill as the superhero.

Superman: Legacy, a 2025 DCU film, will highlight the journey of a much younger Superman, and thus the role is unsuitable for the 40-year-old actor. But Gunn has teased another part for Henry Cavill to take on in the new DCU.

Cavill himself is packed with planning for his new Warhammer original for Prime Video, and the amicable exit is definitely no longer a thorn in his side. But we’ll take a bit longer to get over the fact that we’ll never see Henry as Superman again.

Johnson’s answer was diplomatic, but I bet he, like many DC fans, was disappointed in the news. And now even Black Adam’s prospects don’t look good for the DCU future. But that’s another story, so I’m going to wrap this up. What do you think about Dwayne’s outlook on DC Studios dropping Cavill as Superman? Let us know in the comments!
