You must have heard of dungeon anime where raiders fight their way through to reach a grand goal. ‘Dungeon Meshi’ shows an entirely new side to these quests, focusing on food and cooking rather than blood and gore.
Lyos and his team are on a dungeon journey to get revenge on a dragon that devoured his sister, but no one said they couldn’t have snacks on their way. As this party navigates their way through the maze, they realize that the monsters in the place actually taste nice.
The wraparound jacket on the 12th volume of the Dungeon Meshi manga carried the announcement that it is inspiring an anime series. Studio Trigger is in charge of the production.
This peculiar manga breaks away from the usual action-based dungeon genre to introduce how you can get delicious meals even during the worst crises.
Yes, the main objective is to rescue Lyos’ sister, who is either devoured or taken captive by a dragon, but who doesn’t procrastinate, right? For this team and their empty wallets, it’s far easier to cook monsters from the dungeon than to buy food.
Be it walking mushrooms, giant bats, or screaming mandrakes, there’s always a way to cook them deliciously.
I hope the anime gets a trailer soon because it’s too hard to hold back my hunger right now. In case you haven’t already realized, cooking is my favorite genre, and this one is right up my alley.
Dungeon Meshi was also nominated for the 9th Manga Taisho Award in 2016. Who doesn’t dig a fantasy manga where you can get cooking know-hows? Hopefully, Studio Trigger will do the anime justice.
