Dune: Part Two Trailer, Paul is the New Leader of the Fremen

The sequel to the acclaimed Dune adaptation gets a new trailer, showcasing more of the second half of Frank Herbert’s epic novel. Dune: Part Two is set to release in theaters on November 3, 2023.

The film resumes the journey of Paul Atreides (Timothée Chalamet), who leads the Fremen of Arrakis in a rebellion against the Harkonnen tyranny. The first Dune movie, helmed by Denis Villeneuve, came out in 2021, bringing to life the first part of Herbert’s masterpiece.

Warner Bros. Pictures has unveiled a new preview of Dune: Part Two, featuring additional scenes from the forthcoming sci-fi film. Check it out here:

The trailer showcases significant events where Paul emerges as a vital ally for the Fremen. Dune: Part Two will also explore other planets besides Arrakis and the trailer provides a striking glimpse of Christopher Walken as Emperor Shaddam IV.

For your convenience, we’ve put together all that happens in the trailer in this article to give you a complete breakdown!

1. Paul Becomes the New Leader of the Fremen

The new trailer for Dune: Part Two emphasizes Paul’s role as a leader for the Fremen people, who regard him as their prophesied savior, Muad’Dib.

According to the novel by Frank Herbert, Muad’Dib is a non-native to the planet of Arrakis who will bring about a new age for the Fremen people by liberating them from the oppression of the Emperor and the Harkonnen.

In the trailer, we see Javier Bardem’s Stilgar, the leader of a Fremen tribe, expressing his faith in Paul and his ability to lead the Fremen in a war against their enemies.

The trailer also reveals glimpses of other planets besides Arrakis, such as Caladan and Giedi Prime, and introduces Christopher Walken as Emperor Shaddam IV, the ruler of the known universe and the mastermind behind the downfall of House Atreides.

2. The Return of Gurney Halleck

The latest trailer for Dune: Part Two also features the comeback of Josh Brolin as Gurney Halleck, a warrior-poet and trusted confidant to both Duke Leto and Paul.

Gurney is the weapons master of House Atreides and one of Paul’s principal teachers during his early years on Caladan. Gurney can be seen advising Paul to exploit the Fremen people’s belief in Muad’Dib, the prophesied savior who will liberate them from the tyranny of the Emperor and the Harkonnen.

Gurney suggests that Paul should assume the role of a prophet for his own benefit, implying a cynical and pragmatic view of religion. This seems to create a conflict between Paul and Chani (Zendaya), who says she fears the prophecy of Muad’Dib will destroy the Fremen.

3. Chani Will Have a Bigger Role

The new trailer for Dune: Part Two also hints at some deviations from the book that aim to enhance the story and the characters. The trailer indicates that Chani will have a larger role in the story, as she narrates the opening and closing lines and appears in several scenes with Paul.

This is consistent with Villeneuve’s confirmation that he wanted to give more space and agency to the female characters in his adaptation.

4. Lady Jessica Will Support Paul’s Rebellion

Another change that the trailer suggests is that Lady Jessica will not leave Arrakis with her daughter Alia but will stay on the planet to support Paul’s rebellion. This could avoid a major problem in the sequel, as Jessica’s absence from Arrakis in the book makes her less involved in the main plot.

Despite these changes, though, Dune: Part Two’s trailer shows that it will still respect Herbert’s original novel and its themes, while featuring much more action than the first Dune movie, as Villeneuve described it as “an action-packed, epic war movie”.
