Dragon Ball fans are excitedly celebrating and sizzling as Super Saiyan 4 is back after a whopping 28 years! These buzzing fans crashed websites on Valentine’s Day when SS4 reappeared.
Goku’s Super Saiyan 4 form first appeared in Dragon Ball GT, in episode “Goku’s Ascension” on January 29, 1997. It has finally made a comeback in Dragon Ball Daima’s episode 18, “Awakening.”
This article will cover every detail regarding Super Saiyan 4 in Dragon Ball Daima, GT, and Super.
1. Dragon Ball Daima’s Episode 18 Finally turned Super Saiyan 4 Canon to GT
In Dragon Ball Daima’s Episode 18, Goku transforms into his Super Saiyan 4 form with Neva’s magical powers to defeat King Gomah. This marks SS4 being canon as Toriyama has produced Daima.
In this episode, Goku struggled to face Gomah, even after partnering up with Majin Duu and using his Super Saiyan 3 form. Out of the unexpected, Neva steps in and grants magical powers to Goku, which miraculously transforms him into the Super Saiyan 4 form and makes history for the fans.
Goku’s SS4 form is similar to GT as it has the red color palette, the same hair and eye shape, the fur-like body with the tails, etc.
2. Why Wasn’t SS4 Canon earlier? What made it a canon in Daima?
Goku’s Super Saiyan 4 wasn’t canon earlier as Toei Animation created Dragon Ball GT without the involvement of Akira Toriyama, the original creator of Dragon Ball.
Super Saiyan 4 finally became canon in Dragon Ball Daima as Toriyama had taken part in its creation for his fans. Goku transformed to SS4 when he was up against Gomah in episode 18.
Dragon Ball GT was not canon as it strayed away from the original Dragon Ball Manga and didn’t follow Toriyama’s writing. Hence, even the SS4 form was never considered canon until 2025 with Dragon Ball Daima.
In addition, Dragon Ball Super, which is canon, doesn’t feature the Super Saiyan 4 form.
4. Akira Toriyama officially confirms that SS4 is Canon to Dragon Ball Super
Akira Toriyama, the creator, officially confirmed that the Spirit of Dragon Ball GT is in Daima. Its target audience is GT fans, who are probably 30-year-olds now.
Dragon Ball Daima is like Toriyama’s last gift to his beloved fans. What makes the series even more special is that episode 18 with Super Saiyan 4 was released on Valentine’s Day and will be remembered for generations.
In addition, Super Saiyan in Daima bridges the fandoms of Dragon Ball GT and Super. Since Dragon Ball super fans considered GT fans to be non-canon. Conversely, GT fans don’t consider the Dragon Ball super fans legit as it is relatively new and has a lot of narrative plot-holes.
5. How is Super Saiyan 4 connected to Super Saiyan God (Dragon Ball Super)
Even though Super Saiyan God takes place 3 years before Super Saiyan 4 here in Daima, it has some connections to Dragon Ball Super, like the color palette.
Both of Goku’s forms share a red color palette. However, Super Saiyan God is lighter red (hex code #a00e2a), whereas Super Saiyan 4 is darker and more vibrant (#a30d3a).
In Daima, the Super Saiyan S4 form looks godlier and more primal than in Dragon Ball Super, which looks elegant.
The way these forms are achieved is also different, as Super Saiyan 4 was triggered using Neva’s Demon realm magic. Whereas Super Saiyan God requires a divine ritual to pool in the energy, this was written in the Namekian book of legends. This forms a connection between these forms to the Namekian realm.
6. What are the differences between SS4 In Daima and GT?
There are some evident differences in the Super Saiyan 4 form in Dragon Ball Daima as compared to GT; they are:
- Goku is in his child form, whereas in GT, he is in his adult form.
- Goku’s hands are much bigger, longer, and ape-like than in GT.
- Goku’s bottoms are orange with a red glow, his wristband is another shade of blue, his hair color is red, and he does not have a belt.

7. About Dragon Ball: Daima
‘Dragon Ball Daima’ is the fifth anime installment in the Dragon Ball franchise. The series was announced during the Dragon Ball Special Panel at New York Comic Con 2023, and it is set to air in fall 2024.
The story and settings, as well as many of the designs, are handled by Akira Toriyama, the original creator of the Dragon Ball series. The title “Daima” is a made-up term, which would translate to “Evil” in English. However, the kanji used for Daima means “great” and “demon/magic.”
