Despite being announced way back at the 2019 Comic-Con, Dr. Strange: Multiverse of Madness has a long way before it hits our screens. Until then, watch this page for regular updates on the cast, release dates, and other details on the movie!
1. Doctor Strange Multiverse of Madness Release Date, Director, + Set Updates
Release Date: Dr. Strange: Multiverse Of Madness is currently confirmed for release on March 25, 2022.
The movie was initially scheduled for May 2021, but the movie was pushed back due to production delays, thanks to the virus outbreak. Fortunately, it doesn’t seem like the dates would change this time.
Director: Sam Raimi (known for the original Spider-Man trilogy and horror classics like The Grudge) will be directing Dr. Strange 2. Along with Raimi, Loki series writer Micheal Waldron is writing the movie.
Since Multiverse of Madness is rumored to lean towards the horror genre, it makes perfect sense for Raimi to be on-board.
Originally, Scott Derrickson was supposed to direct, but Derrickson quit back in January 2020 over “creative differences.”
1.1 Set & Production Updates
Update One [April 17, 2021]: Somerset Live reported that Jett Klyne and Julian Hilliard, who both played Billy and Tommy in the Wandavision series, were spotted on the set of Dr. Strange 2 in Somerset.
Update Two [June 21, 2021]: Mara Natuzzi will be playing a character named “Maria.”
The current guess is that she plays Maria Vasquez (The Tarantula), but nothing can be said for sure.
Update Three [June 22, 2021]: The Mandy Casting Network reported several listings for ‘extras’ like novice archers, warrior rag-tag, and an NYPD Cop, confirming that parts of the movie will be shot in New York, apart from London.
2. Cast & Characters
Here’s the confirmed cast list
- Benedict Cumberbatch as Dr. Steven Strange
- Elisabeth Olsen as Wanda Maximoff/The Scarlet Witch
- Tom Hiddleston as Loki
- Rachel McAdams as Dr. Christine Palmer
- Benedict Wong as Wong
- Xochitl Gomez as America Chavez/Miss America
- Chiwetel Ejiofor as Baron Karl Mordo

- Adam Hugil as Rintrah
2.1 Who Is Miss America In Dr. Strange 2?
America Chavez, known as Ms. America, will appear in Dr. Strange 2 and is portrayed by Xochitl Gomez. Chavez was born in the Utopian Parallel and got her powers from the Demiurge. She can travel inter-dimensionally and is invulnerable.
You couldn’t pay me enough to join the Avengers.
America Chavez
America is a relatively new addition to the Marvel comics. Her first appearance was in Marvel’s 2011 series Vengeance and was primarily affiliated with Young Avengers.
Though it’s still unclear what part America plays in the movie, it’s been confirmed that her story ties in with Spiderman: No Way Home.
Fun Fact: Wiccan (Scarlet Witch’s son) was destined to become The Demiurge (the omnipotent, sentient biosphere), from whom America absorbed her powers. America would go on to secretly protect Wiccan, believing that Loki sought to harm him.
2.2 What Is Loki’s Role In the Multiverse Of Madness?
Loki’s role in the Multiverse of Madness is still speculation, but a good guess is that he’s involved on behalf of the TVA. Strange could’ve forced recruited Loki to help him deal with the multiverse madness.
Since the writer of Loki’s show (Micheal Waldron) is also credited for this movie, it’s evident that Loki’s adventures with the TVA and Sylvie will play a big part in Dr. Strange’s quest to fix the colossal mess that is the Multiverse.
2.3 What is Wanda’s Role In Multiverse of Madness?
Like Loki, Wanda’s role is still speculation. But since Billy and Tommy have been spotted on the set of Dr. Strange 2, it does help narrow the guesses down a little.
It’s still unclear if Wanda is one of the bad guys in this movie or where she and Loki stand with the whole ‘saving the universe’ project Steven will try and shove them in. Hopefully, Olsen and the rest of the cast have a few more hints to spare.
2.4 What Is Karl Mordo’s Role In the Multiverse of Madness?
Karl Mordo will be one of the villains in Dr. Strange: Multiverse of Madness. Though he’s unlikely to be the primary threat (thanks to Wanda and Shuma-Gorath being present), Mordo is likely to be one of the driving forces of the plot.
Though Strange and Mordo started as friends in the movies, Mordo was one of the primary antagonists in Dr. Strange’s comics and played the arch-nemeses.
2.5 Is Toby Mcguire in Multiverse of Madness?
Tobey Mcguire will be making an appearance as Spider-Man in the upcoming Dr. Strange movie, as well as Spiderman: No Way Home. Since nothing is confirmed, it’s safe to assume that Tobey’s appearance will be a cameo amidst the chaos.
2.6 Other major characters that might make an appearance
- Wiccan & Speed
- Dr. Doom
- Mephisto
3. Who Is The Villain In Dr. Strange 2?
Shuma-Gorath & Mordo are rumored to be the villains of Dr. Strange 2. Gorath is an ancient evil deity and one of Dr. Strange’s most powerful foes. Mordo was Strange’s friend and a sorcerer before turning to the dark side in the first movie.
4. What’s The Plot Of Dr. Strange 2?
After the events of Avengers: Endgame, Dr. Stephen Strange continues his research on the Time Stone. But an old friend-turned-enemy puts an end to his plans and causes Strange to unleash unspeakable evil.
The official synopsis of the movie
The old friend-turned-enemy is very obviously Karl Mordo. The unspeakable evil is a hint at Shuma-Gorath, though how Strange plans on controlling a deity as strong as that is beyond my comprehension.
5. About Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness
