Actor Matthew Modine, who plays Dr. Martin Brenner in Stranger Things, is hoping to make a surprise comeback in the upcoming season 5 of the series, even though his character was killed off in a previous season.
Dr. Brenner is the head of Hawkins National Laboratory, who ran secret experiments on children with extraordinary abilities. Although Brenner was seemingly killed by the Demogorgon in season 1, he later returned as a primary villain in season 4, before being shot and killed in the second last episode of season 4.
In an interview with RadioTimes.com at the BAFTAs, Modine expressed his desire to return for season 5, despite showrunners Matt and Ross Duffer suggesting that Brenner is definitively dead. Modine is confident that Brenner may still be alive, citing his character’s previous ability to survive impossible situations.
Check out what he said below –
I hope that there’s some way to resuscitate Dr. Brenner and put him in season 5 because it would be wonderful to be part of the last season.
Well we didn’t really see him dead – he was just lying there in the dirt. He’s survived the Demogorgon, he survived Vecna in episode 1 of season 4.

It is improbable that Dr. Brenner will come back to life after being shot in season 4 of Stranger Things, despite his history of surviving difficult situations. However, in a show like Stranger Things, there are various ways that a dead character can still be involved in the story.
In previous seasons, Dr. Brenner appeared in flashbacks and as a hallucination. During season 2, Brenner’s image was projected into Eleven’s mind by Kali or Eight, another former test subject from Hawkins Laboratory. While this was originally done to help Eleven confront her past, such ways could be utilized in the upcoming season to give the heroes a unique weapon against Vecna’s return.
If Kali’s abilities were to be brought back in Stranger Things season 5, the characters could potentially use her power to conjure up visions of Dr. Brenner and distract Vecna, their powerful enemy.
This would be a valuable asset in defeating him and would also tie up a loose thread from season 2. While it is unclear whether Matthew Modine will actually return as Brenner, with filming for the final season set to begin later this year, fans can expect more updates on the cast and plot in the near future.
