Prime Video’s latest satirical psychological horror thriller has gone viral among its viewers for its comment on the dark side of being in a fandom. One of the most disturbing scenes in the pilot of the seven-episode series is where Dre wakes up to find her one-night stand looming over her with a bowl of strawberries pressed to his genitals.
Series creator Janine Nabers discloses to Insider that the NSFW scene mentioned above was inspired by her co-creator Donald Glover’s real life. You can read his full comment below:
Donald told this very funny story about a girl who he really liked, and how after they hooked up, he was standing there with a bowl of cherries, just being like, ‘Hey.’ She was like, so not into it because it’s so weird to hook up with a guy that you barely know and then wake up with him holding a bowl of cherries.
Swarm has gained so much traction in a week since its release due to its mirroring of the real-world celebrity-fandom relationship. In fact, Ni’Jah has a striking resemblance to Beyonce, and like the fictional pop star who has her “Swarm,” Queen Bey has a large community of fans who refer to themselves as the “Bey Hive.”
The show’s quick rise to popularity is also due the appearance of pop stars Paris Jackson and Billie Eilish.
Nabers and Glover’s vision for Dre as an outsider who deals with a crushing loss that leads to her descent into a murderous mania has already skyrocketed the show’s fame. Have you seen it? Drop down your thoughts on the series below.
