Things are just not working out for Viserys I. From a disgruntled wife to rumors of his brother sleeping with his daughter, the King has enough problems to fill a realm and a half. To make matters worse, even his own body is giving up on him.
The king’s health has been deteriorating with each episode. In the dramatic Ep 5, he is even seen coughing out blood and collapsing in the end. Does that mean he’s dead?
King Viserys I Targaryen does not die in House of the Dragon Episode 5. The ending scene with him collapsing is used to depict that his health has worsened beyond recovery and foreshadows his death in the upcoming episodes.
Although Viserys is not dead at the end of Ep 5, his passing is an inevitable part of the story. Know more:
When will Viserys I die?
By now, it is evident that Viserys I won’t be making it out of Season 1 alive. From pus-filled sores to blood-ringed coughs, the show has done everything in its capacity to visually emphasize that Viserys’ health is not just dire but untreatable as well.
I don’t expect Viserys to die in Ep 6, as the preview shows us he is somewhat still active despite being frail. The show will now introduce Alicent and Rhaenyra’s kids as well, and set up some more exposition about the state of events since the last time jump of 10 years.
Considering how these storylines might need the space of at least two episodes, Viserys I may die in House of the Dragon Episode 8 or 9.
What illness is Viserys I suffering from?
Since the show hasn’t explicitly stated what Viserys is suffering from, most assumed it was the cuts from sitting on the Iron Throne that had turned infectious.
Some of his ailments do stem from these pesky cuts, but Constantine Paddy has gone on to state in EW’s West of Westeros podcast, that the king is actually suffering from leprosy.
Leprosy is treatable with modern medicine, but not so much so with the teas, brews, and leeches that Westeros is currently into. Sadly, there will not be any magical, divine intervention (like the kind that brought Jon Snow back from the dead) that will save Viserys. So, enjoy the presence of King Viserys in the upcoming episodes for now. He does not have a lot of time left on the screen.
