When that enormous white stag appeared behind Gus, it was obvious that the kid had to have some sort of superpower.
A healthy mix of thrill and fluff, Sweet Tooth follows the story of little Gus— a half-human and half deer boy, discovering dangerous lands with a gruff protector. For the most part, the only thing that sets Gus apart from humans are his adorable ears and antlers— but is that all there is about being a hybrid?
Gus definitely has superpowers. It may not be as dramatically obvious, but his powers have been shown throughout Season 1. Though his powers are still unclear, it appears that along with speed and super smell, Gus can also summon dears and talk to animals.
For a hybrid child to have a better sense of smell than humans sounds like a no-brainer, agreed. But summoning animals and talking to them? That strictly falls into the magic category.

1. What Are Sweet Tooth’s Powers?
Gus has displayed a plethora of abilities throughout the first season, and while most of them are obvious, some are not. Gus’s abilities include night vision, super speed, enhanced senses, and in some cases, summoning and talking to animals.
Super Speed: Children are usually faster than the rest of us, but Gus even more so. Despite having human feet, Gus has a deer’s knack for running and jumping. We saw this with how easily Gus caught up to Big Man after he decided to leave the fence. But perhaps it was most apparent when Gus leaped a significant distance to catch the train; it wasn’t anything too baffling, but for anyone (let alone a child) to leap that high and fast unassisted — that can’t be explained without Gus’s deer powers.
Super Smell & Hearing: Gus’s fluffy ears and tiny nose aren’t just to make him cuter; they’re much helpful than that. Thanks to his mixed deer genetics, Gus can sniff out any person or object, like when he found Jepp’s candies medicine among the buttload of cargo on the train. He can even tell you the number of people in an area by listening to their silent footsteps.
Things like this come especially handy when you’re being hunt down by men with bombs.
Night Vision: Like most wild animals, Gus also has Night Vision. His eyes glow like headlights in the dark, just like a deer would. And it sounds cool, but it’s creepy too. Perhaps the only creepy thing about Gus.
1.1 Can Sweet Tooth Talk To Animals?
Gus can talk to animals and also make them obey him. For example, he could get the wild tiger of the Animal Army to stand down and retreat into its cage. It’s unclear whether Gus is the only one with this ability or if other hybrids like Wendy can do it too.
1.2 Can Sweet Tooth Control And Summon Deers?
Gus can summon deers whenever he’s experiencing intense emotions (fear, anger, etc.). He summoned a mysterious white stag when the Last Men pinned him down, and later in the woods, he summoned a herd while running away from Judy’s house.
It appears to be unintentional so far, but maybe Gus can learn to use his powers later on in the show. I’d really like to see more of the White Stag, to be honest.
2. What Caused The Virus In Sweet Tooth?
According to Season 1, the virus in Sweet Tooth was made in the laboratory of Fort Smith — the place where the first hybrid, Gus, was created. However, Birdie, the scientist who created Gus, tested a virus from Alaska and implied that something had gone very wrong with the experiments.
What went wrong? Still a mystery. But it’s evident that the virus H5G9 (that causes “The Sick”) is loosely related to the phenomenon of hybrids being born.
