Throughout the first season, Gus only cared about finding his mom – Birdie. But when he and Big Man finally got to Colorado, things took a drastic turn for the little guy.
Sweet Tooth is a 2021 Netflix drama that follows Gus, a half-deer child, as he ventures deep into the clutches of a world that wants to cage him. Accompanied by a reluctant poacher and protector, Gus is determined to find his mom despite knowing nothing about her.
Honestly speaking, I was sceptical that Birdie even existed. It sounded too much like a fantasy Pubba made-up to get the kid to shut up.
But then Gus made it to Birdie’s place all the way in Colorado, and I was on the edge of my seat with anticipation. I wanted to see her and listen to her side of the story, of what really happened that fateful night at the Fort Smith labs. But could I?
Does Sweet Tooth Find His Mom?
Gus does not find his mom in Colorado. Instead, he finds Judy, who tells him Birdie has been missing for years. Judy shows Gus Birdie’s lab records, and he learns that he wasn’t “born” but “created” in the lab of Fort Smith and that Pubba and Birdie aren’t his parents.
Gus’s reaction to the news broke everyone’s heart (though I did think he was stupid to run away like that) and made it clear that he won’t be looking for Birdie anymore.
After all, Gus has bigger things to worry about now. He needs to find a way to save his new hybrid friends from Abbot, or risk getting dissected in cold blood. I guess adoptive family traumas had to wait for the greater good.
Maybe, instead of Gus finding her, Birdie will find Gus instead. Then, we could spend a good chunk of season 2 watching their individual stories come together — just like the finale of season 1.
What happens at the end of Sweet Tooth?
The season finale kept me on the edge of my seat right until the end. It was fantastic but energy-draining to say the least.
Gus runs away from Judy’s home and accidentally contacts Abbot. Unfortunately, by the time Gus and Jepp make up, Abbot arrives and shoots Jepp. Gus is taken to the other hybrids, where Dr. Singh refuses to kill him. Bear manages to contact Birdie, and Aimee saves Jepp. They plan to rescue the kids.
How Aimee and Jepp plan on rescuing the kids, and if Birdie will be a part of this heist, remains to be seen. But one thing is for sure: season 2 is going to be filled with wholesome reunions.
Will there be a second season of Sweet Tooth?
Netflix is yet to officially confirm a second season for Sweet Tooth. But should production begin, we can expect the season to arrive in late 2022 or early 2023. All of season one’s cast is expected to return, but so far, none of the production members have made any comments.
There were rumors that Netflix might drop the show despite it performing so well on the charts, and it sounds believable since if they did, this wouldn’t be the first time Netflix pulled that stunt on us.
But here’s to hoping that these rumors don’t mean anything and we do get another season — I’d like to see more of this fantasy apocalypse world, to be honest.
