- How does The Elder die in John Wick 4?
As some fans may remember, John first travels to meet The Elder in “Chapter 3.”
The Elder grants his wish, contingent upon the successful assassination of Winston (Ian McShane). Ultimately, John abandons the deal to fight against the High Table’s army alongside Winston before the latter double-crosses him.
The first noted death in John Wick 4 is of The Elder, who is shot dead in the head by the protagonist, John Wick himself.
1. How does Charon die?
The first tragic casualty of John Wick’s war with the High Table is Charon, Lance Reddick’s dutiful and highly skilled Concierge. He has long served Winston and the New York Continental Hotel.
Unsatisfied with the failed assassination of John and looking to consolidate his power, The Marquis de Gramont chooses to make an example out of Winston.
The Harbinger officially deconsecrates and condemns their hotel and orders Winston “excommunicado.” The Marquis personally executes Charon with a pistol, setting up the film’s big bad as the evilest threat the franchise has ever seen.
Sadly, Lance Reddick passed away at age 60 on March 17, 2023. He had several projects in post-production, including “The Ballerina spin-off film as Charon.
2. How does Koji Shimazu die in John Wick: Chapter 4?
“Chapter 4” introduces audiences to the Osaka Continental, operated by Hotel Manager Koji Shimazu and his daughter, Concierge Akira. After refusing to give Chidi and his men access to the hotel resources, Chidi deconsecrates the Osaka Continental and launches a deadly assault on the building.
Though Koji efficiently works his way through most of the men that outnumber him, one can wound him just before he comes face to face with his old friend Caine. A blind swordsman with unmatched skills, Caine critically hurts Koji shortly after their duel begins.
Despite Caine’s urge to surrender, Koji refuses to relent, forcing Caine to kill him.
3. How do Killa and Chidi get killed?
One of the more predictable deaths in the film was that of Scott Adkin’s gregariously cartoonish not-so-mini-boss Killa. Killa cracks his head open on a staircase after John knocks him from a club balcony.
As any “John Wick” fan knows, laying a hand on a dog is a surefire way to get yourself killed in the most heinous way possible. After the latter tries to kill Tracker’s dog at the Parisian hotel, John even chooses to attack Chidi rather than save his skin.
In the end, during the spectacular battle on the steps toward Sacre Coeur, that dog tears Chidi’s groin to shreds, pins him to the ground for a headshot, and urinates on his corpse. In terms of “John Wick” kills, this may be the most intentionally undignified in the entire series.
4. How does The Marquis de Gramont die?
The Marquis spends most of the film brooding and musing about consequences while auditioning to be on the cover of Vogue magazine. Despite his best efforts, The Marquis is killed by the most embarrassing weapon of all pride.
After John sustains a nasty gunshot during his duel with Caine, The Marquis enacts his right to step in for his proxy, wanting to deliver the final blow to John himself.
John takes his free shot and puts a bullet in The Marquis’ forehead, killing him instantly and ending the nightmare for good.
5. Is John Wick dead?
Of course, we all know that John Wick survived the duel with Caine because he didn’t die just yet when the blind man shot him in the abdomen. That was why the Marquis was so eager to have a final shot at Wick as he realized he could become a legend in the history of the High Table.
That was Wick’s opening to kill the Marquis and claim victory in the duel. Nevertheless, he still died after the fight. He had already suffered too much in one night as his body just gave up on him after he had won his contest with Caine and the Marquis.
John Wick fought all night, awakened severely battered and bruised in his attempt to get through countless assassins. He was shot by assassins, hit by cars, fell off buildings, beaten by trained fighters, and pushed down a 200-step stairway.
When John got to his duel with Caine, he was no longer in the best physical condition. Any man would have already died at that point, but Wick merely willed himself through to the duel to finally be free.
And when he got shot numerous times in his duel with Caine, he no longer had enough in him to survive. As such, the gunshot wounds in the fight were the nails on his coffin as John died from his injuries and his body’s exhaustion.
He pushed his body too far past its limit for it to be able to recover from its wounds and injuries.
