Charlotte has carried on the legacy of being a Jun Maeda show, giving us lots to cry about, including character deaths.
Upon being released, despite being a hit-or-miss show, Charlotte instantly rose in popularity. The psychological aspects of the show, along with the hints of romance sprinkled in, made the premise even more exciting. One of the show’s best features was its brilliant soundtrack, which somehow made the sad moments even more tragic.
While there were a lot of complaints about the show’s pacing, it still managed to build a good relationship between the characters and evoke intense feelings from the audience. This was especially the case when Charlotte hit us with the first real character death, just a few episodes in.
While this series does not have as many gruesome deaths as one might expect, it has its fair share. Please take note of the extensive spoilers, and with that sorted out, here’s a list of all the characters that died in Charlotte.
1. List of Characters That Die in Charlotte
- Ayumi Otosaka
- Misa Kurobane
- Takehito Kumagami
I. Ayumi Otosaka’s Death
Ayumi Otosaka died in the sixth episode of Charlotte after the school building collapsed on her. Fortunately, she escaped death later when her brother, Yu Otosaka, time traveled and saved her.
Ayumi’s brother, Yu Otosaka, and the other student council members realized that she had a special ability.
However, before they could quarantine her, Ayumi was threatened by her classmate, leading to an abrupt awakening of her ability “collapse.” Due to this, the school building collapsed on Ayumi and killed her along with the other students.
This event was the first trigger to Yu’s downward spiral into depression and became a motivating factor for him to bring Ayumi back to life.
In the tenth episode titled “Plunder,” Yu stole Shunsuke’s time-traveling ability and saved his sister from dying. Thus, while Ayumi did technically die once and traumatized her brother, she is alive and well by the end.
II. Misa Kurobane’s Death
Misa Kurobane died in a motorcycle accident before the anime’s beginning and existed as a spirit that could possess her sister’s body.
Misa died a second time when she and Yusa gave up their abilities to Yu, thus losing any and all means of contacting the living world.
Misa Kurobane was the older sister of Yusa Nishimori that passed away when she was 16. Since then, she could only interact with the living world by possessing Yusa, who had the ability of spiritism. When Misa took over her sister’s body, she exhibited tomboyish and violent tendencies and could use her pyrokinetic abilities.
By all means and purposes, Misa was already dead by this point in time but still maintained her consciousness as a spirit, which could be counted as a sort of living.
It was only at the end, when both the sisters willingly gave up their abilities to Yu Otosaka, that Misa’s existence was erased entirely, killing her a second time.
III. Takehito Kumagami’s Death
Takehito Kumagami died in Charlotte’s eleventh episode after being impaled from the wreckage caused by Yu’s “collapse” ability going out of control. He shielded Nao while sacrificing himself, and ultimately died in Shunsuke’s hands.
In the episode titled “Charlotte,” Kumagami was threatened by an overseas terrorist organization to divulge information about special ability users.
After learning about this, Takehito’s best friend, Shunsuke, and his brother Yu came to the rescue. Unfortunately, Yu was attacked by another ability user, which resulted in his ability going out of control leading to the factory’s collapse.
During this time, Kumagami protected Nao Tomori and was instead impaled by metal rods, leading to his tragic death. This was one of the saddest moments in Charlotte, and it was only enhanced further when Shunsuke held his best friend’s body in his hands and screamed.
