Netflix’s Bridgerton series did not give us too many cliffhangers, but a couple of deaths have spiced up our wait for the second season. Don’t worry, all the Bridgertons made it to the end of Season 1 alive, except Lord Bridgerton, who was already dead. But the Featherington family seemed out of luck in this matter.
1. Which Characters Died in Bridgerton?
- Lord Featherington
- Sir George Crane
2. How Was Lord Featherington killed?
Lord Featherington’s gambling addiction becomes the end of him after two bookies discover that he had rigged a large-stakes bet. He is killed after consuming a poisonous wine.
Father to three daughters and host to another young woman of marriageable age, Lord Featherington always stayed in the background throughout Season 1. But he was more alert than he let on, especially given how he furiously rejected a man’s proposal for his daughter.
When Lady Featherington questioned him on his absurd decision, he avoided even making eye contact. The shrewd woman then went through his office only to discover that her husband had gambled away most of his wealth and was neck-deep in debt.
Lord Featherington had also lost all the money kept aside for his daughters’ dowries. This is why he so contemptuously refuses any marriage proposals because he cannot pay for their dowries.
But once Lady Featherington calls him out for his callousness, he decides to do something about it. He conspires with the local boxer (and Simon’s friend) Will Mondrich to fix a boxing match on which he bets his whole estate.
The enormous stakes grab the attention of the bookies conducting the gamble, and their suspicions are deepened when Will loses the game. Until then, Will has never lost a boxing match, ever. The bookies confront Lord Featherington after uncovering the devious plan and kill him.
Lord Featherington’s death comes as a shock to his family since he does not have a male heir. Since it is the 19th Century, only a man could inherit his estate. Since he does not have a son, all the property goes to an unknown male whose identity is yet to be revealed.
3. How Did Marina’s Lover Sir George Crane die?
Lord Featherington’s betting habits caused one more major catastrophe. A young Marina Thompson came to live with the Featheringtons to find a suitable match in the season. But the only reason she was there was because Marina’s father had loaned money to Lord Featherington, who was unable to pay it back.
What’s more, Marina was pregnant when she arrived, and it was up to Lord Featherington’s family to find her a husband. When Lady Featherington discovered that Marina was pregnant, she first tries to cut off all ties with her lover, Sir George Crane.
Sir George Crane, Marina’s longtime lover, was away fighting the Peninsular War in Spain. Marina was waiting for a response from Sir Crane after writing to him about her pregnancy. Lady Featherington then forges a letter from Sir Crane to Marina, refusing to marry her. Marina is heartbroken and decides to get married to someone from the Ton.
But things go awry when the local gossip girl Lady Whistledown exposes the truth about Marina’s pregnancy. Marina’s husband-to-be Colin Bridgerton calls off the wedding. But Colin’s younger sister Daphne comes through and successfully contacted Sir George Crane in the Spanish War.
It turns out Sir George Crane had died on the battlefield, unfortunately, before he could finish his letter to Marina. Crane’s younger brother arrives at the Featherington estate with the news and ends up offering a marriage proposal to his brother’s widow.
Reluctant at first but without any other options left, Marina eventually agrees, and the two set out to start a family by the end of Season 1.
4. Does Anthony Die in Bridgerton?
Anthony and Simon get into a one-on-one duel over Daphne. It is the classic pistol duel at the crack of dawn where the battle is not over until someone dies. However, both Simon and Anthony survive the battle because Daphne interferes at the last minute and resolves the matter.
As we know, Simon was unwilling to marry Daphne despite having fallen for her head over heels. His spiteful promise to his dead father that he would no longer sire any children so that the family name died with him comes in the way of his and Daphne’s love. Daphne, on the other hand, wants nothing more than marriage for love and to have children.
But their passion gets foils all of Simon’s plans, and they indulge in less than appropriate behavior (They kiss, a tad passionately.) only to be caught by Anthony. When Anthony demands Simon marry Daphne over the disgrace he has caused to his sister, Simon refuses. They decide to duel the matter as honorable men.
However, Daphne intervenes and agrees to marry Simon even if she cannot have any children. Simon veils the truth of why he does not want children and instead says that he cannot have children at all. Daphne is left with no option but to agree, thus saving both Simon and Anthony.
