Lupin’s part two has had us questioning the extent of the writers’ and the characters’ wits. After all, in the end, it is a battle of ploys, traps, and manipulation driven by strong emotions on both ends – Pellegrini and Assane.
As someone who isn’t the biggest fan of the show, I think Lupin has still got its moments of absolute brilliance, and how Pellegrini gets caught tops that list. The writers crafted that part of the narrative elegantly, and the writing was as tightly knit as it gets.
The rivalry of Assane and Pellegrini spans across a generation and is worth a watch. We have all been rooting for Assane for too long and can’t wait to see him come out on top. So the question remains – Does Pellegrini get caught in Lupin?
Pellegrini gets arrested after his wife Anne confesses to Guidera about Pellegrini framing Babakar, Assane’s father. But, Pellegrini’s influence on the Interior Orders gets him released. Assane then devises a master strategy and, with the help of Guedira, finds evidence that connects Dumont and Pellegrini to Babakar’s setup. Finally, Pellegrini gets caught by Assane, confesses, and is turned to the justice system.
After Pellegrini was released, Assane wasn’t going to let him go so easily. I mean, it’s his lifelong thirst for vengeance that has driven for so long, and it won’t be quenched unless he sees the man who framed and killed his father behind bars. As melodramatic as that sounds, the depiction is nothing like it.
Assane was intuitive and had already made plans by planting a mole on the inside of Pellegrini’s operation – the man stealing one of the Lupin books. I bet there’s something poetic about this.
As the events unfold, the mole tells Pellegrini about a fundraising concert for Juliette’s Charity Foundation where the people will contribute the money for charity, but it would just go in Pellegrini’s pocket.
There’s a saying that goes something like, “Sometimes you end up creating demons by your ill-actions that will inevitably devour your existence.”
Think of Assane as the demon who did just that. All the contributions went to the charity, and he left clues for Guedira that helped him uncover footage of Dumont confessing and other evidence that linked Pellegrini to the crime. It all culminated with Assane, Pellegrini, and a knife on his throat that made the vicious man confess.
I think the tropes for Lupin are pretty classic and used in several revenge and heist stories. But Lupin’s masterstroke lies in how those tropes are depicted visually. The background score, the editing, the shots used, etc., all come together in a rather sophisticated manner and believe it or not, the French just adds to it all.
So now that Pellegrini is caught, what next?
Will Pellegrini Walk Free Again?
Pellegrini has been in this situation before, but the evidence is just too strong against him this time. Furthermore, he confessed to all the crimes, from framing Babakar to making Leonard kill Fabienne and then getting Leonard himself killed. It is all right there served on a platter.
However, I feel there’s always a way to twist the laws. I mean, he confessed to everything with a knife to his throat, and he could easily use that to suggest he was coerced into giving a false confession. I know I’m going towards geeky mode with the law, but that would be a possible conflict.
Well, I guess we just have to wait for season 3 or part 3 to find out what happens to Hubert Pellegrini.
