Mollie Kyle in Killers of the Flower Moon is the kind of character who we all know will be done wrong with. Her story is even more tragic than that of her family members, especially since she remains alive and lives the pain.
Mollie Kyle is an Osage woman who marries Ernest Burkhart after being persuaded by his uncle, William. William secretly wants to get hold of the Osage’s oil money and uses Ernest and his older brother, Byron, to get rid of the Osage family members one by one.
William wants to get hold of their oil wealth, so the three together begin systematically killing every member of the Osage family. Meanwhile, Ernest slowly falls in love with Mollie. On William’s words, Ernest begins poisoning Mollie’s insulin injections because she starts demanding a thorough investigation into the Osage murders.
After Mollie’s complaints, an FBI agent, Tom White, figures out that it is William and his nephews behind the Osage murders. They are arrested, and Ernest is no longer able to poison Mollie and she remains alive.
In the end of the film, Mollie has one final conversation with her husband where she asks him if he poisoned her insulin shots. Ernest denies her accusation, but Mollie realizes he is lying. She divorces him and later remarries. She eventually dies due to diabetes.
What happens to Mollie Kyle in real life?
The Osage murders took place in Oklahoma in the 1920s. Like in the film, in real life too Mollie Kyle divorced her husband after she found out about him poisoning her insulin injections. She also realizes that he knew about the murder of her sister, Anna.
Mollie remarried a man called John Cobb and they lived in the Osage reservation until 1937, when Mollie passed away due to diabetes. Scorsese reads out Mollie eulogy in the film, and we find out that Mollie was buried with her family members.
However, everyone forgot about the Osage murders and it was never discussed or written about after Mollie’s death. Mollie and Ernest’s children, James and Elizabeth inherited the family’s fortune after her death.
