For thousands of years, Meliodas has been forced to meet, fall in love, and watch the woman he loves die before his eyes repeatedly from the cruel curse placed on them.
Throughout this 3000-year journey to break the curse, Meliodas has met 107 reincarnations of Elizabeth and tried to protect her every time, only to watch her inevitably die each time.
I’d say Elizabeth and Meliodas’ tragic love story nearly gives Romeo and Juliet a run for their money. But don’t worry, this love story comes with a happy ending instead.
Meliodas broke the curse in Season 4, Episode 13, after awakening his true magic while battling the Demon King in Purgatory. Merlin later reactivated the curse, but the Seven Deadly Sins collectively re-defeated the Demon King.
Meliodas then destroyed the Ten Commandments, destroying the Demon King and the curse for good.
Why Were Elizabeth And Meliodas Cursed?
Meliodas and Elizabeth were cursed by the Supreme Deity and the Demon King for betraying the Demon Clan and the Goddess Clan, respectively. Meliodas was cursed with Immortality while Elizabeth was cursed with Eternal Reincarnation.
Before meeting Elizabeth, Meliodas was a ruthless, powerful demon feared by all. As the son of the Demon King and the Commander of the Ten Commandments, the Demon King wished for him to take up the mantle.
Meliodas wordlessly followed his father’s orders even though he thought the conflicts were pointless. His life finally took a turn when he met Elizabeth and fell in love with her. Elizabeth being a goddess and Meliodas being a high-ranking demon, the love between them was forbidden.
The two were sick of the conflict and swore to put an end to it and turned their backs on their kind. Meliodas abandoned his position as one of the Commandments and their leader, creating a power imbalance that started the Holy War.
For their treason, Elizabeth and Meliodas were then punished by the Demon King and Supreme Deity.
Elizabeth lost her life resisting the Supreme Deity and the Demon King. Later, while wandering across Britannia, Meliodas met her first reincarnation and learned of the curse. While Meliodas was cursed never to die, Elizabeth was cursed to be reincarnated repeatedly.
Doesn’t really sound like a curse, now does it? Well, there’s a huge catch.
You see, while Meliodas lives on, Elizabeth loses her memories of her past lives every time she reincarnates. In every life, Elizabeth is destined to meet Meliodas to fall in love again. But, the moment she regains all her memories, she dies three days later in front of Meliodas’ eyes.
And while Meliodas can die, the curse simply resurrects him, but he loses all emotion, reverting to his former wicked persona.
Since the Demon King wanted Meliodas, his son, to be his heir, he saw his emotions as a hindrance to realizing his potential and awakening his true magic. Hence, every time Meliodas does happen to die, the Demon King imprisons his emotions in Purgatory.
How Did Meliodas Lift The Curse?
Meliodas awakened his true magic while fighting the Demon King in Purgatory. After defeating the Demon King, who had taken over his body, Meliodas used his true magic to destroy the curse.
In Season 2, Episode 20, Estarossa stabbed all seven of Meliodas’ hearts and killed Meliodas. Meliodas was resurrected shortly after but had been stripped of his emotions, and his personality had reverted to that of his old wicked self.
Since Elizabeth had already begun regaining her memories, her eyes had changed back into her goddess eyes, and it was only a matter of time before she died like her previous reincarnations.
Later, Meliodas revealed in Season 3 that he could break the curse if he were more powerful or as powerful as the Demon King. The Demon King had possessed so much power that he merely took half of it and split it into ten fragments, known as the Ten Commandments.
Without his emotions, Meliodas sought to break the curse not out of love but to keep the promise he’d made to Elizabeth’s very first reincarnation.
Meliodas promptly disbanded the Seven Deadly Sins and resolved to absorb all of the Ten Commandments to reach the same power level as the Demon King and use the Demon King’s power to break the curse.
But, absorbing the Ten Commandments allowed the Demon King to take hold of Meliodas’ body as his vessel instead.
While Ban, the other Sins, Elizabeth, and the Archangels Ludociel and Mael fought the Demon King in the real world, Meliodas’ emotions were simultaneously fighting the Demon King in Purgatory.
Meliodas awakened his true magic during the fight, defeating the Demon King in Purgatory just as the combined power of the Sins incapacitated him in the real world.
After regaining control of his body, Meliodas revealed that he had acquired the power to break the curse in Purgatory, referring to his true magic. He asked Merlin to reveal the form of their curse with her powers and lifted the curse on both him and Elizabeth.
1. Does The Curse Return?
Elizabeth’s curse was reactivated in Season 4, Episode 15. Since the Demon King hadn’t been entirely destroyed, the Sins believed he had reactivated the curse.
After destroying the Demon King, it was revealed that Merlin had reactivated the curse as part of her plan to resurrect Chaos.
While leaving to go live with Meliodas in the Demon Realm, Elizabeth was nearly killed by a falling rock. Her curse had returned, and the Sins assumed the Demon King had reactivated it. Since the Demon kid was a god, he could not be simply destroyed.
The Sins then met up with the Demon King at the Magic Lake. The Demon King had now taken over Zeldris’ body after Cusack forced the Ten Commandments on him.
After being forced out of Zeldris’ body, the Demon King possessed the land of Brittania itself. The Sins collectively defeated him, and Meliodas used his newfound power to destroy the Ten Commandments, destroying the Demon King for good.
After the fight, the Lady of the Lake revealed that Merlin had intentionally delayed the time spell to allow the Demon King to take hold of Meliodas. Reactivating the curse and using the Seven Deadly Sins to defeat the Demon King had all been a part of Merlin’s plan to resurrect Chaos, the primordial force said to have created the world itself.
