Is Lee Yeon still powerful? Is Tale of the Nine-Tailed 1938 a prequel?

After Lee Yeon jumped into the Samdo River to save the world from the Imoogi and the plague, the two people who found it the hardest to live in his absence were his brother Lee Rang and Lee his lover Ji-ah. However, Season 1 of The Tale of the Nine-Tailed ended happily.

Lee Yeon is seen to be dead in the end, but he returns by reincarnating himself. The twist is that he returned this time without his magical powers as the mythical nine-tailed fox or gumiho.

However, it is a happy ending as Yeon reincarnates into the mortal world and reunites with his lady love, Ji-ah. Later, he gets the hint of Rang’s supposed reincarnation as a young boy. The finale also hints that Yeon is still a fox. Yes, you heard that right! Lee Yeon gets his powers back.

While everything about the ending went as expected, what was surprising was the ability Lee Yeon still held when hunting evil spirits. We saw how he pursued the Spirit of Misfortune, spreading evil on the streets.

He swung the gumiho sword from the red umbrella as if he were still a powerful nine-tailed fox. We believe that Lee Yeon is still the gumiho that he was in the past, and that he has been given his yeowu enthusiasm back.

The K-drama ends with Yi Yeon retaining his gumiho powers, and they will hopefully be explored more in the ongoing Tale of the Nine-Tailed Season 2.
