God of War Ragnarok resumes Kratos’ journey from God of War (2018) while also doing justice to the adventure that began way back in 2005 with the franchise’s first installment. Unsurprisingly, the conclusion of this much-anticipated game will leave the fans buzzing.
After setting Ragnarok in motion, the father and son duo, Kratos and Atreus, head out to acquire more knowledge about the apparent end of the world. On their way, they come across several familiar faces, including Heimdall.
The Guardian of the Bifrost plays a very important role in causing Ragnarok. However, his absence after an altercation with Kratos towards the end of God of War Ragnarok has got fans wondering if Kratos really killed Heimdall and if that ascertained Ragnarok.
Kratos really does kill Heimdall in God of War Ragnarok. However, he doesn’t kill Heimdall due to his extreme hatred of Gods, but he does so in order to protect his son, Atreus. After killing Heimdall, Kratos steals the Gjallarhorn from him and uses it to trigger Ragnarok.
Here’s more about why Kratos killed Heimdall and how that caused Ragnarok in God of War Ragnarok.
Why does Kratos kill Heimdall in God of War Ragnarok?
Kratos kills Heimdall in God of War Ragnarok to protect the life of his son, Atreus. While Atreus and Thor are busy following Odin’s orders and searching for the pieces of a mask, Kratos and Frey visit the Norns to learn more about the prophecy. Unfortunately, he learns that Heimdall will kill Atreus unless he kills Heimdall first.
Once Atreus returns from Ironwood, Freya attacks him and Kratos. Upon facing defeat, Freya offers to help Kratos and Atreus in the ultimate fight against Odin in exchange for their help breaking Odin’s curse that restricts her to Midgard.
Shortly after, Kratos defeats the World Tree defender, Nidhogg, and breaks the curse on Freya, following which she decides to join forces with him. However, Atreus chooses a different approach by seeking out Odin to get to know him better. When he meets the Allfather, he gets assigned the task of finding the pieces of an ancient mask that’d help Odin see the events of Ragnarok.
Subsequently, Atreus and Thor set out on the journey to obey Odin’s command. Simultaneously, players witness Kratos paying a visit to the Norns.
They predict that Heimdall will kill Atreus unless Kratos kills Heimdall first. Consequently, he finds Heimdall and puts an end to him to prevent the Norns’ predictions from coming to life.
How did Heimdall’s death trigger Ragnarok in God of War Ragnarok?
Technically, Heimdall’s death itself doesn’t trigger Ragnarok. However, his death enabled Kratos to trigger Ragnarok.
After killing Heimdall, Kratos steals the Gjallarhorn from his dead body to ascertain Ragnarok with the help of the great horn. Then, he travels to Muspelheim, formulates a plan with Surtr to stop Odin, and uses the Gjallarhorn to trigger Ragnarok in God of War Ragnarok.
This act allows the rest of the realms to bleed open a portal into Asgard, enabling Odin’s enemies to launch an attack on his home. Soon after, Kratos, Atreus, Freya, Freyr, and Angrbroda join the battle and defeat Odin.
Such an event doesn’t only prove that Heimdall’s death triggered Ragnarok, but in a way, also went on to cause it.
How did Kratos defeat Heimdall in God of War Ragnarok?
In God of War Ragnarok, Kratos defeats Heimdall with the help of the Draupnir Spear. Brok and Sindri created this weapon specifically to help Kratos overpower Heimdall, as he’s one of the most powerful and cunning warriors in the nine realms. The Hulda brothers forged this spear by using Odin’s Draupnir Ring.
Furthermore, the Lady of the Forge in Svartalfheim forges the Draupnir Spear. Nonetheless, the Hulda brothers provide the ingredients to create the spear, which are listed below.
- The Draupnir Ring
- A Spearhead
- Blood of a God
Sindri stored the Draupnir Ring under his house, where it kept on replicating itself. On several occasions, Sindri and Brok use the self-replicating nature of the ring to fund their expenses. Additionally, the Lady of the Forge uses Kratos’ blood as the final ingredient by turning his blood drops into a red piece of cloth.
