Episode 5 of Ms. Marvel finally revealed to us Aisha’s backstory and everything else we were all waiting to know. Since the beginning, Kamala’s great-grandmother, Aisha, has been a mystery.
In fact, Kamala visited her grandmother Sana to find out more about her great-grandmother, who was also a Clandestine, or djinn.
In Episode 5, Kamala is finally able to meet Aisha, whom she had wanted to meet for so long. Though their meeting was not a pleasant one, it was extremely significant as it is what shaped Kamala’s family in the present day.
Kamala finally met her great-grandmother Aisha, after traveling back to the past, in 1942. She meets Aisha in her dying moments when Aisha requests her to get Sana on the train with her father and protect the bangle.
What is Aisha’s backstory?
Aisha is Kamala Khan’s great-grandmother and is also a Clandestine or a djinn herself. Sana, Kamala’s grandmother, is Aisha’s daughter.
In earlier episodes, we’ve seen several glimpses of Aisha via flashbacks, visions, and photographs, but this is the first time we see her on the screen. The episode opens with Aisha running from a British officer in a pre-independent India, as was revealed in Episode 4.
She is able to tackle the police officer easily with a dagger, considering her superhuman strength as a Clandestine. However, while other Clandestines in the show, including Najma, want to return to their home planet, Aisha has no intention of going back and is happy on Earth.
Aisha is in love with Hasan, and the couple together has a daughter, Sana. During the partition, religious riots break out and Aisha is forced to flee with her family. But she has another thing to tackle, as Najma, along with her fellow djinns, is also after her.
Now, as per the story that is prevalent in Kamala’s family, Aisha disappeared after saving her daughter and a trail of stars guided Sana back to her father. However, it seems like Kamala was suddenly brought back into the past to fulfill a duty that she was supposed to do.
At the train station, Aisha shows Hasan the truth of who she really is and leaves her bangle with Sana, while she deals with Najma. Najma stabs Sana and promises her that she will get hold of the bangle one way or the other.
So, Aisha sacrifices her own life to save Hasan and Sana. It is in her dying moments that she meets her future great-granddaughter, Kamala.
How does Kamala meet Aisha?
After being stabbed by Najma, Aisha finds herself in her dying moments. Kamala is able to witness all of this as she has traveled back to the past. Seeing Aisha in her last moments, she approaches her.
Kamala first meets Aisha and interacts with her in her last moments. On seeing Kamala, Aisha’s eyes turn purple for a brief period. A dying Aisha requests Kamala to help Sana get on the train and also tells her to protect the bangle. She also gives her a photograph before dying.
Kamala then uses her energy to lift Sana above the crowd, but they fall to turn into stars. So, the “trail of stars”, which was created by Kamala using her energy, is what guided little Sana back to the train to her father Hasan.
We have earlier heard Sana tell Kamala this exact story, where a trail of stars led her back to her father. Now, it is clear that it was Kamala who actually guided her back and is thus responsible for her family being where it is today.
Perhaps, Kamala was accidentally thrown back into the past for this very reason, so she could help Sana. Kamala’s actions shaped the future of her family.
