After seven whole seasons of unparallel excitement of Brooklyn 99, we more or less have an idea of how the precinct works. With Amy’s Type A personality, Jake’s goofiness, Boyle’s innocence or Rosa’s badass vibe, work actually gets done out here.
So the big question is does our favourite Jake actually get to be Captain in the series? The Captain is the head officer or chief officer of the fictitious 99th precinct in Brooklyn, where the series is set.
It is the position held by Raymond Holt on and off throughout the series. We have met other Captains in the course of the series such as Captain Seth Dozerman and Captain Julie Kim.
So which of the main characters become Captain? What exactly is the system like? I am sure at one point, all of us in the B99 fandom have searched up on the New York police system. So let’s have a look at what our beloved characters are upto in their careers.
Does Jake Peralta Become Captain?
In the course of the show as of now, Jake Peralta does not get promoted to the rank of Captain. It is more likely that we’ll get to see Amy Santiago as the Captain rather than Jake as Jake never really expressed a desire to become Captain.
Besides, he does not even want to take up the Sergeant’s exam because of the amount of studying that it requires. Now that is a stage one needs to cross way before one can aim to become Captain of a precinct.
Frankly speaking our goofy Jake is best suited as a Detective rather than a Captain or Sergeant because of his goofiness. Naturally, he is nowhere near to becoming the head of a precinct.
With the birth of his son Mac and Amy being promoted to a Sergeant, I think it only makes sense that Jake does not take up a more higher position.
Brooklyn Nine Nine has always delivered a progressive message, so I personally would love to see Jake taking up more responsibility at home to take care of his son and Amy being the one working considering how hardworking and committed to her work she is.
But, Jake Peralta is the only detective in the 99th precinct to be promoted to a First Grade Detective. Given the amount of crime he has singlehandedly taken care of, it is not a surprise.
What Are The Ranks In The Police Department?
This is solely in reference to the show. Considering the 99th precinct itself is actually fictional, I am not sure whether everything in real life works in the same way, so don’t consider this a guide to becoming a police officer.
I mean, Suits isn’t the best information if you want to become a lawyer, is it? Same with Brooklyn Nine Nine.
So as far as the show goes, after you pass out of the police training academy, you become a blue uniformed officer. After a few years of working as an officer, the next rank one is promoted to is the Detective.
Remember how Jake and Amy are referred to as Detective Peralta and Detective Santiago respectively? This is the rank. Before that, they were both patrol officers. The same applies to Rosa or Charles
After the rank of the Detective comes the rank of the Sergeant. To become a Sergeant you need to pass an exam. Amy becomes one in the show. Proud moment! The Sergeant is basically like a team leader of the Detectives.
The Sergeants can sit for an exam to become a Lieutenant. Terry Jeffords is one in the show.
Finally there’s the highest rank, that of the Captain. This is what we see Raymond Holt as. The Commisioner is the one to appoint Captains to different precincts. Holt’s nemesis Madelaine Wuntsch is seen to do this throughout the series.
What Rank Is Jake Peralta?
Jake Peralta works as a First Grade Detective of the NYPD stationed in the 99th Precinct in Brooklyn in the series. But his dream job is that of an NYPD liaison officer with the FBI.
Captain Kim offers Jake an offer to work with the FBI in the brief chat he has with her. But though Jake does not explicitly states it, he probably did not accept the job right then.
This is because Jake and Holt did not trust Kim when she came in as Captain because they suspected her to be one of Madelaine Wuntch’s pawns like the previous captains sent by her turned out to be.
They were wrong and Kim resigns as the Captain in the very next episode. But just because Kim is gone does not necessarily mean the job offer is also gone. Since Jake is not seen to officially reject the offer, this could be a hint to what Jake might end up doing in Season 8.
Who Is The Captain As of Season 7?
For a brief period in the beginning of Season 7, Julie Kim is seen as Captain in the 99th precinct. She literally just appears in one episode, titled “Captain Kim.”
But since Jake and Holt suspects her and she is hurt, Kim ends up resigning. Eventually, Raymond Holt comes back in his position of Captain after the unexpected death of his nemesis Madelaine Wuntch.
