Did Jack Ryan succeed in catching Suleiman? What happened to Suleiman?

Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan ended its first season in slam-bang fashion while also setting up the thrilling Season 2. The show just premiered its third season and is already gearing up for a fourth and final season.

While loyal fans have already binged the third season and are speculating regarding the plot of the upcoming season, those who still haven’t might need a recap of the previous seasons.

Let’s jump into it and refresh your memory.

Does Jack Ryan catch Suleiman?

With the assistance of Greer, Ryan is able to chase Suleiman out of the hospital and into the Metro subway, where the terrorist is unable to get a signal to set off the bomb. Ryan ultimately shoots Suleiman while Greer kills the other terrorists in the hospital and saves the President.

We know how Suleiman’s hatred of France and the US makes them the targets of his bizarre planning. It begins six months before the events of the series, when Suleiman exhumes corpses riddled with a particularly virulent strain of ebola. He then has them delivered to a ‘black biology’ site to be experimented on.

Seven weeks before the main story began, a group of Doctors Without Borders, including 3-4 Americans, are captured and imprisoned by ISIS under the command of Colonel Al Radwan (Jameel Khoury).

After a successful escape from US Military custody thanks to Ali, Suleiman decides to send his younger brother to Paris to gear up for a deadly attack on the City of Lights.

Ryan and Greer, in association with French Intelligence agents, try to neutralize the cell, but not before one of the terrorists ignited a suicide bomb that demolishes an apartment building in Paris. Ryan eventually tracks Ali to the French Alps and kills him. Later, we see Suleiman’s people murder a well-liked French priest.

But that is just the beginning.

At the priest’s funeral in Paris, Suleiman ‘s agents successfully set off Sarin gas in the church, murdering over 300 people. Suleiman made sure to publicly take the credit for the Paris attack in a series of videos uploaded to the Internet.

The story progresses further, and we see Suleiman utilize his funds funneled through Yemen to buy the loyalty of Colonel Al Radwan’s troops in Syria. He manages to overthrow Al Radwan and consolidate his power as the new Sheikh.

Upon learning about Suleiman’s location, Ryan and Greer retrieve Hamim and the girls from Turkey and bring them to the US as refugees. On arrival at Suleiman’s base, the black ops team discovers that all the terrorists have escaped.

They proceed to rescue Doctors Without Borders, which is the exact result Suleiman wanted.

Back in the US, we see President Andrew Pickett embroiled in chaos as he is reunited with his friend Dr. Nadler (Matt McCoy). Dr. Nadler unknowingly carries ebola and ends up exposing the President and other members of the administration.

Just when you think it couldn’t get any worse, they are quarantined in Washington Memorial Hospital, which is the target of Suleiman’s next big attack. Suleiman manages to enter the US with a fake passport and orders one of his men to plant a bomb in a local pizza parlor.

The explosion manages to distract the police and the emergency services so that the terrorists can attack Washington Memorial. They manage to wreak havoc by setting off a nuclear gas bomb in the hospital to kill the President but luckily, Ryan figures out that the hospital is Suleiman’s target.

We then see Ryan chase Suleiman out of the hospital and finally shoot him (in the back!) and successfully save the President.

Suleiman’s Terrorist Background

Kudos to the show for explaining the villain’s history with such precision.

The horrific bombing raid of 1983 in Lebanon made Mousa bin Suleiman (Ali Suleiman) and his younger brother Ali (Haaz Suleiman) orphans. Both the brothers managed to leave the Middle East and came of age within the Muslim community in Paris.

Both the brothers were subjected to racism and harassment by the suspicious French police who considered them outsiders, even though they were French citizens.

By 2001, Mousa graduated from college with a degree in economics, but no French bank would hire him despite his forward-thinking dissertations that online banking is the future of finance. He also got arrested when he tried to save his brother from being harassed by two French police officers.

While the tragic details of his life might be sympathetic, Suleiman is certainly evil and hellbent on death and destruction. During his first encounter with Jack Ryan in the first episode, Mousa is posing as the bodyguard to his Yemenese contact when the US Military detains them.

As Ryan interrogates ‘the bodyguard’, he discovers that Mousa is the ‘Suleiman’ he’s after. Ali leads an attack on the US base and rescues his brother.

The initial face-to-face meeting between Ryan and Suleiman sets the stage for the rivalry between the two men that encompasses the rest of the season.

Jack Ryan Season 1 was a thrilling ride and it cleverly set the storyline for the second season. There’s no point in waiting anymore, because the third season deserves your attention right now!
