Helly has been trying to get out of Lumon from the moment she woke up after her Severance procedure. Across the episodes, we see her try different things to send a message to her outie.
These include trying to sneak in messages on her arms, in a pen cap, as a note through the door, etc. In fact, she even filed a resignation letter on two occasions, and on both of them was rejected by her outie.
So, in Episode 4, she decides to go into the elevator and hang herself with a wire chord. Luckily Mark finds her and tries to rescue her. So does she die in Episode 4?
Helly survives the suicide attempt. She suffers some minor damage and is admitted into the hospital but is very much alive, as we saw in Episode 5.
Helly is the classic character trope who doesn’t abide by a prison-like institution’s rules and is always on the lookout for an escape. Despite this familiarity, Helly has this flare that makes you submit to her pursuit and attempts to make it out of Lumon.
The characters in Severance have been written with a great deal of ambiguity. We do not know everyone’s back story but just know glimpses of it.
We know about Mark and his wife’s death. However, when it comes to Helly, we do not know much about her outie’s life.
In one scene, when she sees the video of her outie rejecting her resignation, we do not know what makes her do that. Are her circumstances as hopeless as Mark’s? Is Lumon somehow manipulating even the outie and preventing her from resigning?
The answers to all these questions, among others, are pretty unpredictable. After all, the show is barely putting any cards on the table.
When it comes to Helly’s life or death, I think she’s treading a dangerous path. In Episode 5, we saw her make a deal with Mark about finishing up Lumon’s map. This way, she could find a way to get out and become free.
Petey seems to have done that in the past too, and we know he’s dead right now. This could be due to the re-integration procedure, but something made him go through it.
This is the biggest mystery of the show, and maybe Helly might die while trying to unravel it.
I guess we just have to wait and find out how it all unfolds. Right now, Helly’s chances of staying alive look very bleak.
