Episode 5 saw Task Force X finally becoming a team through the course of a small mission where they take down a Butterfly headquarters.
Each one seemed to be having the other’s back, and just like at Senator Goff, it’s Economus who takes down the most vicious challenger of the lot. While I think Economus’ contribution to the team deserves an appreciation blog post, this one’s actually about Harcourt.
Amidst all the celebratory singing in the van, we see Harcourt smile for the first time. She looks around the van, smiles at Peacemaker and Vigilante, and even captures the moment by clicking their picture. Is she reciprocating the pass Peacemaker made on her, or is she developing some kind of feelings for Vigilante?
Harcourt is just happy about how everyone teamed up to beat the Butterflies. She may like Peacemaker or Vigilante in the future, but for now, she just approves of Peacemaker as a “not so bad” person and Vigilante as a sane person.
Harcourt seems to play the role of a lone wolf in the team. At the end of the day, she likes to sit in a bar with a beer alone with herself. But could that be changing now? Well, I’ve got a few theories as usual.
Theory 1: Harcourt Might Like Peacemaker
Peacemaker has been attracted to Harcourt since Episode 1. However, his conversation with Adebayo in Episode 5 hints that his feelings could be more than just that. We see him try to win Harcourt’s approval at the end of Episode 5’s mission, and it looks like she’s giving it.
This could either mean that she thinks he can get a job done or that there might be some inner good to his racist and sexist outer personality. While it is not confirmed yet, we see her smile at Peacemaker, click a photo with him, and share it on a group chat with the team members.
So, this could be an indication that she has begun liking Peacemaker back.
Theory 2: Harcourt Might Like Vigilante
Vigilante has never shied away from getting a job done, no matter how dirty it gets. In fact, he’s pretty pragmatic in situations such as these and knows how to fight well.
In an earlier episode, when Peacemaker couldn’t shoot Senator Goff or his family because of his complexes, Vigilante came to everyone’s rescue and took down three Butterflies out of the four, which is 75% of the job done.
Harcourt was mildly impressed with that and understood that he could be helpful to the mission. Furthermore, she even picked him up from prison after he tried to kill The White Dragon, aka Peacemaker’s father.
In Episode 5, the two were fighting side by side and were stuck with the Gorilla all by themselves, which could have brought them closer together.
Also, don’t forget that in the picture she clicks, there’s Vigilante too, and she smiled at him as well. So, maybe she likes him more now.
Theory 3: Harcourt Just Likes That Task Force X Is Now a Proper Team
Harcourt is most likely just happy to see the team get together and bag a small victory. She could be smiling because of how her team members are celebrating without any worries about what might come next.
Furthermore, the picture she clicks has Economus too, and the group chat she created is named after his favorite song.
So perhaps she is just open to the idea that she might be working with a decent bunch of human beings, and there’s some significance to what they all are doing.
While the above two theories might come true, for now, I think this one is the most plausible theory. Even if Harcourt is into Vigilante or Peacemaker, it wouldn’t be serious. It would just be sexual and for fun.
If she does have more chemistry with Vigilante, Peacemaker would be affected, but Adebayo might talk sense into him, and he’ll realize that he doesn’t need Harcourt’s validation. On the other hand, if she does end up sleeping with Peacemaker, it might just be a one-time thing, and they would just remain good friends after it.
Conclusion
I don’t think the show has scope for romances since it already needs to unpack quite a bit on Project Butterfly, Murn, Locke, The White Dragon, and even Waller’s involvement. With all this going on, and only three episodes to go, we might not even get to the part where the characters catch any kind of feelings for each other, besides platonic ones.
I guess we’ll just have to wait and find out what James Gunn’s plans are. He’s known to throw curveballs at us in every single episode, so we never know what will happen next.
However, I hope that Harcourt’s character is explored a little more and her own story comes to light because we don’t know much about her background. While everyone’s arc seems to be moving forward, Harcourt’s appears to be at a standstill.
So, it would be fascinating to get hints about her past and probably a glimpse of what made her become the lone wolf she is today. I guess we can just wait and watch.
