Ensign Charly Burke was Orville’s newest member in S3. With the ability to visualize space and geometry in four dimensions, she soon became their trustworthy navigator.
Although Charly’s stance against Isaac in Ep 1 may have led to a rough start, fans agree that she soon became one of their favorite characters—especially because of how sincere and kind she was.
But her time has now come to an end, as in Ep 9 she sacrifices herself in order to save countless others. For fans who don’t want to lose hope, the question stands: Is Ensign Charly Burke really dead?
After Admiral Perry steals the weapon and delivers it to the Krills, Charly Burke flies in with a few Orville team members to retrieve it. However, the Krills have already activated and Charly’s only way of stopping it is to stay back and overload the system. She is believed to have died in the explosion that ensued.
This season of The Orville did go quite like Game of Thrones, with all the scheming and alliances. So, while it was a surprise that Ep 9 gave us a Krill-Maclan and Union-Kaylan alliance, what was even more shocking is that Admiral Perry betrayed his own people.
His actions were condemnable but understandable at the same time. He did not trust that the Kaylans would maintain peaceful relationships with the Union for long. With the fact that they were so close to the all-powerful weapon, they’d find some way to either steal it or find a solution for it.
So, Perry thought that the only way to ensure the Kaylans would not betray them is to give the weapon to the Krill, who’d use it to finish off the Kaylans once and for all.
Once the Union learns about this, they send in a retrieval team made up of Grayson, Keyali, Charly, Kaylon Primary, and Isaac to bring back the weapon from Draconis 427.
While Charly gets to the chamber holding the weapon, she realizes that it’s already been activated. There’s no way to stop the attack now, other than to overload it and have it blow itself up. But to do this, she has to stay back.
Her team members have to reluctantly let go of her, as she bravely embraces the situation. In the end, she is successful and the weapon blows up, causing destruction to a huge radius around it.
Sadly, there’s no way Charly could’ve survived the explosion. But not only did she save countless people, but her act of sacrifice may have also rewired the way Kaylans think, opening them up to real talks of peace in the future.
