Does Doom Patrol have any romantic storylines?

Doom Patrol is unlike any other DC show! The out-of-the-box, eccentric plotlines truly make it the black sheep of the franchise—in the best way possible.

But as a superhero show, it’s filled to the brim with a lot of dark humor, cynical tones, and quirky storylines that deal with having to save the world from different villains. In the midst of all of this, does Doom Patrol have any romance?

Doom Patrol has many romantic storylines involving its main characters—Jane, Rita Farr, Negative Man, Robotman, and Cyborg. However, none of the main characters date each other in the show.

Doom Patrol is in no way a romance drama, but it does explore these emotions and bonds in its main characters. To clarify once again, none of the main characters date each other because they share a found family-type of relationship.

But romance is an important part of Doom Patrol. In its own way, the show explores the different facets of life that a “misfit” superpowered being would go through. Some of the characters’ backstories and even the origin of powers are deeply tied to these romantic plotlines.

Here are some spoiler-free examples of the same:

  • Jane: Because Jane has DID, it’s quite difficult for her to have a healthy love life. In fact, this is reflected in her personality Karen, who’s obsessed with ’90s romances. However, in Season 3, the show does hint that there could be something romantic between Jane and Shelley Byron/the Fog.
  • Rita Farr: While Seasons 1 and 2 show Farr’s previous romantic relationships, Season 3, in particular, depicts a new romance with Malcolm DuPont. This relationship was quite crucial to her arc!

Besides this, the show also portrays romantic storylines of minor or guest characters, especially for episodes that are standalone.

So if you’re holding back on watching Doom Patrol because you thought there wasn’t enough romance, now you know better!
