The Boys season 3 trailer is filled with easter eggs and references to what’s to come in the show’s latest installment. However, one of the most incredible things we saw is Billy Butcher acquiring Homelander like powers.
Billy is seen shooting laser beams from his eyes and wreaking havoc wherever he goes. Even his best bud MM says that the entire point of them going behind the supes was not to let anyone have that kind of power.
So, now that Billy Butcher has powers is he a supe?
Billy Butcher is NOT a supe. He is given a serum that gives him powers for 24 hours, with which he would be able to destroy Homelander.
Amongst everyone else in the gang, Billy Butcher is the one who hates supes the most. Especially after everything Homelander did with his late wife. He borderline hated the kid as well, but because he’d promised his dying wife he’d take care of him, he’s become more tolerant.
The Boys season 3 picks up one year after the events of season 2. Hughie and Butcher are trying to expose the activities at Vought by working with the government. However, as we see in the trailer, Hughie realizes everything is rigged, and they have to go by Butcher’s method.
How does Billy Butcher get his powers?
One among the multiple “methods” could be Butch himself getting superpowers of his own. He injects himself with a green serum whose powers are meant to last for 24 hours. We also see that he’s being handed 3 vials, which means he’s going to paint the town red (literally!) with the blood of his enemies.
While he’s not precisely a supe, he does seem to exhibit all the negative traits of being one, right from gaining power, having no boundaries, trying to get his enemies at any cost, and more. The only difference between him and Homelander seems to be that his target is not the commonfolk but the supes.
So, if you see Billy is becoming what he hates the most. In the comics, too, this storyline has a tragic ending where after Billy Butcher gets Homelander, he turns on his team. Will season 3 explore this arc, or will they tweak it to suit their creative direction? I guess we’ll just have to wait and find out.
